October 8, 2010: A parent conference will be held in October featuring a keynote speaker from the popular humanitarian Me to We program.

On Saturday, October 23, the Halton District School Board’s Parent Involvement Committee will host a free one-day workshop for parents and community members at Milton District High School (396 Williams Ave.) from 8 a.m.-2:15 p.m.

The day will begin with a keynote address from Louise Kent of the Me to We program, started by Free The Children founders Craig and Marc Kielburger. Through her stories, Kent will take parents on a journey of how to help nurture children who will care and contribute, explore youth leadership and assist parents to help their children find their own place in the world.

“The evidence is consistent, positive, and convincing – any form of parent engagement influences student achievement at all ages,” says Yaw Obeng, Superintendent of Education with the Halton District School Board.

Twenty additional workshops are scheduled with topics ranging from bullying and collaborative problem solving to health awareness and equity and diversity.

Child minding is available upon request for children three years and older. The conference includes a light breakfast and lunch. Community awareness displays and American Sign Language interpreters will be provided upon request.

Parents and community members are asked to register online at http://info.hdsb.ca/picreg.
