Trustees review names shortlisted for new Burlington elementary school
March 3, 2011: At their March 2nd meeting, Halton District School Board trustees reviewed the shortlist of names for the new Burlington elementary school currently under construction and scheduled to open in September 2011.

According to school board policy, the Halton District School Board encourages public input in the naming of new schools.  Suggestion forms and boxes were placed in neighbourhood schools, the Burlington Public Library (Tansley Branch) and online through the board website.   Members of the public were encouraged to suggest names through this public process.  A committee reviewed all names submitted and developed a shortlist for trustees.

The following is the shortlist of names and a brief explanation for these chosen names:

· Dundas Heights Public School – School located close to Dundas Street/Hwy #5

· Garth Webb Public School – Burlington resident and Second War World D-Day veteran who spearheaded the establishment of the Juno Beach Centre in Normandy, France. Mr Webb spent years raising the millions of dollars necessary to build the Centre, which opened on June 6, 2003.

· John William Boich Public School – Former educator and superintendent with the Halton Board of Education, leadership roles in provincial educational associations, conducted research educational projects in other countries, committed Burlington community member.

· Sylvia McNicoll Public School – Award-winning author of more than 20 children’s books, visits schools regularly through the Ontario Arts Council’s Artist in Residence program. Resides in Burlington

“Each of these names has significance within the Burlington community,” says Don Vrooman, Chair of the Halton District School Board. “The Board would be honoured to have any of these names associated with our new elementary school.

The new school is located at 2474 Sutton Drive and is the third elementary school to be built in the Orchard community in the northeast section of Burlington.
