June 8, 2012: On Friday, June 15, 2012, students from the Halton District School Board will participate in the 25th annual Special Athletes’ Track Meet.
This Halton tradition integrates a competition for athletes with physical challenges concurrently with a junior track meet for the Burlington area schools. The track meet will take place from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Nelson Stadium, 4181 New St. in Burlington.
This year, more than 170 special athletes are expected to participate compared to the first year of operation in 1987 when the track meet had a total of 12 participants. Coaches, school staff, friends, family members and volunteers provide support and encouragement for the athletes.
The special athletes’ events will include running races, distance and precision throws, a slalom event for students with wheelchairs and T-ball. In addition to these competitive events, athletes may take part in three participation events ─ the four-person team relay, the 50-metre assisted roll for students with wheelchairs, and the bocce ball throw.
Burlington’s Top Hat Marching Orchestra will play O' Canada at the beginning of the day, followed by a lap around the track by all of this year’s participating athletes.
This event provides special athletes with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and celebrate their successes with fellow students, friends and family.
Note to the Media: Please RSVP to Jason Misner, Communications Officer, as a staff person will be assigned to help expedite your visit on the day of the event.
