Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week held November 13-19

November 10, 2011: Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week runs from November 13-19 and many schools within the Halton District School Board are highlighting their ongoing work to reinforce to students ways to make everyone feel welcome and part of the school community. Below are some examples of what is being done at Board schools:

  • Georgetown District High School: The school’s Gay-Straight Alliance will be making announcements addressing issues of bullying, and have created T-shirts and buttons that publicize students’ pledge to change their vocabulary.
  • Sam Sherratt Public School: Grade 6 students wrote pledges about how they will make their school climate more positive. They will be read aloud at an upcoming assembly.
  • Falgarwood Public School: A large T-shirt is being created that will be cut into puzzle pieces.  The message will be "Pledging to be an Upstander, not a Bystander". Each class will sign their T-shirt and it will be reassembled and hung in a prominent place in the school.
  • Lakeshore Public School: Student Parliament is preparing a bullying prevention skit

The Halton District School Board believes every student has the right to learn in a safe, healthy and inclusive environment.  This belief has guided the Board’s implementation of the Safe Schools Act, the Code of Conduct, and the development of policies to ensure schools are safe, positive and supportive places to learn. “This is a week to highlight the work schools are doing on a daily basis to create a positive school climate,” said Janice Hambrock, the Board’s System Principal responsible for Safe Schools “Through Ontario Ministry of Education curriculum expectations, as well as school and classroom-based activities, positive relationships are being fostered in our schools every day.”

The Ontario Ministry of Education has designated the third week of every November as Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week to help promote safer schools and positive learning environments.
