Halton’s public elementary and secondary schools come together for Haiti -- more than $45,000 raised to date
Iroquois Ridge High School challenges all Oakville high schools to join in fundraising to build a school in Haiti
As stories of the devastation in Haiti continue in the aftermath of the January 12th earthquake, Halton elementary and secondary schools have rallied together to respond quickly and generously. Some schools began to collect money for relief and recovery efforts immediately; other schools are planning events and fundraising activities during the next month.
To date, students, parents, and staff have raised more than $45,000 with only 27 of the Board’s 100 schools reporting their contributions.
In many schools, these activities have been initiated by students and supported by staff, school councils and parents.
One such school is Iroquois Ridge High School in Oakville. Students and staff are spearheading a campaign to raise $24,000 to build, equip, and staff a school in Haiti through the Free the Children Foundation. Students have made an appeal to all Oakville high schools and private schools, as well as the Town of Oakville, to join their efforts to provide learning and give hope to Haitian children. Staff members Jane Greenhill and Susan Graham are supervising the students’ fundraising efforts. More information is available on the Iroquois Ridge High School website (http://chatt.hdsb.ca/~irhs) or by calling the school at 905 845-0012.
“There is authentic and meaningful learning for students when they come together to help others, and learn about their role as citizens of a global community,” says Wayne Joudrie, Director of Education for the Halton District School Board. “I’m extremely proud of the efforts of our school communities to provide support for the Haitian people.”
