At the April 6, 2011 meeting of the Halton District School Board, trustees selected a name for the new elementary school currently under construction at 2474 Sutton Drive in the Orchard community in northeast Burlington. The choice was made from a list of names collected from suggestion boxes in the neighbourhood schools and the public library.
The new elementary school will be called John William Boich Public School.
John Boich is a former teacher, principal, and Halton District School Board superintendent (1972-79), who dedicated his career to education. Following his time as a superintendent, Boich served as the Executive Director of the Ontario Association of Education Administrative Officials and on numerous committees and boards, conducted research projects for the Ministry of Education, and provided expertise on several educational studies in other countries.
John Boich is known as a vital contributing member of the Burlington community. Most recently, he co-chaired the Shape Burlington committee – a citizen advisory committee on civic engagement that recommended changes in the way city hall engages the public.
Mr Boich passed away on March 15, 2011.
“John William Boich is a very fitting name for the new school,” says Don Vrooman, Chair of the Halton District School Board. “His life's work, both in Canada and around the world, demonstrated his deep passion for education. Boich believed that a community's strength is the result of an engaged, inclusive and diverse citizenry. The Orchard is a perfect example of such a community. His accomplishments will no doubt inspire our students.”
