Halton District School Board releases Grade 10 literacy test scores
June 15, 2010: Today, the Halton District School Board released the school-by-school results of the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT) for Grade 10 students.

Ninety per cent of Halton District School Board students who wrote the test for the first time passed, which is above the provincial average of 84 per cent. The success rate of students in Halton has been maintained over the past five years while the number of successful Grade 10 students in HDSB has grown with the population.

Superintendent of School Programs Jeff Blackwell feels strongly that HDSB students are being well prepared for the literacy test.

“HDSB schools have continued to focus on helping all of our students successfully demonstrate their literacy skills,” he said. “Not only do we have one of the highest success rates in the province, we also have one of the highest participation rates. Every year for the past five years, more students have passed the test than the year before.”

Students who have not been successful on the OSSLT are able to take the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Course (OSSLC). Successful completion of this course meets the literacy requirement for graduation.
