Students exceed Ontario average in
Reading, Writing, Math assessments

September 15, 2010: Results released today from the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) indicate Halton District School Board students continue to perform above the provincial average.  These results were based on assessments completed in the 2009-10 school year for Grade 3 and 6 Reading, Writing and Mathematics, and Grade 9 Mathematics.

This year’s results in Grade 3 Reading and Math and Grade 6 Writing show notable gains in student achievement over the previous year’s results.   The Board’s Grade 3 results show significant improvement was made in Reading, from 65% to 69%, while the provincial average was 62%. Grade 3 Math results rose from 73% to 77% while the provincial average was 71%.  Grade 6 Writing, results increased five percentage points from 69% to 74% while the provincial average was 70%.

“We are pleased with our students’ EQAO results on the Grade 3, 6 and 9 assessments,” says Ruth Peden, Associate Director of Education.  “Student achievement continues to improve as a result of focused and responsive instruction by Halton teachers.”

“It is evident that the broad range of instructional strategies implemented by teachers in our JK to Grade 12 classrooms continues to engage students and help them learn,” adds Peden.  “The consistent use of research-based strategies to respond to student needs, ongoing formative assessment and daily engagement of all students will continue to be a priority for our schools.”

Results from the Grade 9 Math assessment, both Academic and Applied programs, are well above the provincial standard (Level 3 & 4, or a B grade or above).  On the Grade 9 Academic Math assessment, 89% of students, representing an enrolment of 2,958 students, achieved the provincial standard (provincial average 82%). On the Grade 9 Applied Math assessment, 52% of students, representing 760 Grade 9 students, achieved the provincial standard (provincial average 40%).

At the Grade 6 level, results indicate Halton District School Board students continue to exceed the provincial standard in all three assessment areas.  In Grade 6 Reading, the Halton District School Board average was 78% (provincial average 72%), the Grade 6 Writing scores were 74% (provincial average 70%) and in Grade 6 Math, Halton students achieved 66% (provincial average 61%). These results represent the assessment of 3,634 Grade 6 students who were eligible to write the test in May 2010.

On the Grade 3 assessment, student results were also above the provincial average. In Grade 3 Reading, the Halton District School Board average was 69% (provincial average 62%), the Grade 3 Writing results were 74% (provincial average 70%) and in Grade 3 Math, Halton students achieved 77% (provincial average 71%). This data represents the results of 3,800 Grade 3 students who were eligible to write the assessment in May 2010.
