Halton District School Board students continue
to perform above provincial average
September 14, 2011: Results released today from the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) show Halton District School Board students continue to perform above the provincial average.  These results were based on assessments completed in the 2010-11 school year for Grade 3 and 6 Reading, Writing and Mathematics, and Grade 9 Mathematics. 

This year’s results in Grade 3 Reading and Writing show gains in student achievement from the previous year’s results. Specifically, the Board’s Grade 3 results in Reading increased from 69% to 71% of students achieving at or above the provincial standard, while the provincial average was 65%.  In Grade 3 Writing, results show an increase from 74% to 77% of students achieving at or above the provincial standard, while the provincial average was 73%.  There were 3,932 students enrolled in Grade 3 at the time of the assessments.

Grade 3 Mathematics decreased by 1% to 76% of students achieving at or above the provincial standard. The province saw a drop of 2% in Grade 3 Math to 69% of students achieving at or above the provincial standard. During the past five years, the Halton District School Board results for Grade 3 Math increased by 3% overall.

At the Grade 6 level, Reading results increased from 78% to 79% of all students achieving at or above the provincial standard, while the provincial average was 74%. In total 3,774 students were enrolled in Grade 6 at the time of the assessments. In the past five years, the Halton District School Board results for Junior Reading increased by 11% overall. 

As well, results in Grade 6 Writing also improved in the 2010 assessment.  Results indicate an increase of 3% from the previous year (from 74% to 77%) of all students achieving at or above the provincial standard, while the provincial average was 73%. During the past five years, the Grade 6 Writing results for the Halton District School Board increased by 13% overall.

Grade 6 Mathematics decreased by 2 (or 2%) percentage points to 64% of students achieving at or above the provincial standard. The province saw a drop of 3% in Grade 6 Mathematics to 58% of students achieving at or above the provincial standard. In the past five years, the Halton District School Board results for Grade 6 Mathematics increased by 2% overall.

The Grade 9 Mathematics assessment measures the mathematics skills The Ontario Curriculum expects students to have learned by the end of Grade 9. Separate versions of the assessment are administered to students in the academic and applied courses.

For the 716 students enrolled in the Applied Math course in 2010-2011, 53% of students achieved the provincial standard, a one year increase of 1%. The province saw a 2% increase from last year with 42% of students achieving the provincial standard. Over the past five years, the Halton District School Board results for Applied Mathematics have increased 8% overall.

There were 3,179 students enrolled in the Academic Math course in 2010-2011 at the time of the assessments. On the Grade 9 Academic Math assessment, 89% of students achieved the provincial standard, maintaining the previous year's result. The province saw a 1% increase from last year with 83% of students achieving the provincial standard. During the past five years, the Halton District School Board results for Academic Mathematics have increased 10% overall.

“It is evident the broad range of instructional strategies implemented by teachers in our JK to Grade 12 classrooms continues to engage students and help them learn,” says Jeff Blackwell, Associate Director for the Halton District School Board.  “The application of research-based strategies to respond to student needs, ongoing feedback, and daily engagement of all students in Literacy and Numeracy will continue to be a priority for our schools.”

Note: The provincial standard is Level 3 & 4, or a B grade or above.
