June 24, 2011: At a Special Board Meeting on June 22, 2011, trustees with the Halton District School Board approved the operating and capital budgets for the 2011-12 school year. Both budgets are compliant with the province’s Public Sector Accountability Board (PSAB) requirements.
The 2011-12 operating budget for the Halton District School Board totals $560,446,778, while the capital budget totals $66,237,358.
“With this budget, we are building on the investments and the Board’s operational objectives of 2010-11”, says Lucy Veerman, Superintendent of Business and Treasurer for the Halton District School Board. “This year's collaborative budget development process involved our trustees, senior staff, board committees and community. We were able to work within some challenging financial parameters and bring in a balanced budget for both operating and capital needs for 2011-12."
The 2011-12 budget reflects an ongoing commitment to student achievement and continual improvement of Board programs and services for every student. By focusing on the three goal areas of the Halton District School Board’s Strategic Plan – Students, Staff and System – the budget reflects the needs of a growing school board through investment in school teaching staff, school support staff and administrative staff. The projected growth in enrolment has also resulted in additional staff (136.7 full-time equivalents from the 2010-2011 revised budget) in order to meet class size legislation and/or program requirements.
“The 2011-12 budget demonstrates our commitment to manage the issues that have resulted from a growing system, and to provide for continual support for student achievement and program initiatives,” says David Euale, Director of Education for the Halton District School Board. “This budget will help support initiatives arising from that Strategic Plan, and help us frame our Operational Plans in order to continue to meet – and exceed – expectations for our students and our communities.”
“We are pleased to be able to set parameters for the operating and capital expenditures of our Board in order to provide stability to programs and services,” says Don Vrooman, Chair of the Board. “We believe the budget reflects our mission of inspiring and supporting learning; creating safe, healthy and engaging environments; and providing opportunities for challenge and choice.”
