Nov. 14, 2011: The Halton District School Board teacher is proud to announce that Jane Kerr-Wilson, M.M. Robinson geography teacher, has been nominated and accepted into the Royal Canadian Geographical Society's College of Fellows.
On November 1, 2011, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society announced 40 distinguished individuals from across Canada were inducted into the College of Fellows, the Society’s voting body. The latest members were officially inducted during a November 3rd ceremony in Ottawa. Only Fellows of the College are able to nominate. There are currently 413 active Fellows, including 71 Honourary Fellows.
For the last two summers, Kerr-Wilson, from Burlington, worked as the lead writer for the Ontario Ministry of Education's Grade 9-12 Curriculum review of Geography courses. She has written for numerous publishing companies including the Teacher’s Guide for McGraw-Hill Ryerson's Grade 9 applied text, Canadian Geography: A Sense of Place. The 23-year Board teacher also leads the Social Justice and Community Development Specialist High Skills Major at M.M. Robinson that will provide students with tools to become engaged community members.
Kerr-Wilson recently won the provincial election to become the Ontario representative for The Canadian Council of Geographic Educators, a three-year voluntary appointment.
The induction into the College of Fellows is an honour and a reflection of the great work done by Halton District School Board colleagues, said Kerr-Wilson.
“I have had a wonderful career in Halton working with some of the province’s, and I would argue the country’s, best geography teachers,” she said. “I do believe this recognition is for all Halton geography teachers.”
Kerr-Wilson joins an illustrious group of Fellows including playwright and author Dan Needles, James Marsh, the original editor-in-chief of The Canadian Encyclopedia, renowned psychologist Frederic Jackman and Rudyard Griffiths, a founding member of the Historica-Dominion Institute.
