Students to join in Law Enforcement Torch Runs for Special Olympics

June 7, 2010: On Thursday, June 17, 2010, students in the Halton District School Board will join members of the Halton Regional Police Service for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. There will be three separate runs happening on the same day in Burlington, Oakville and Milton.

At approximately 9 a.m., the torch will be passed from the Hamilton law enforcement partners at Plains Road and Highway 6, kicking off the Burlington leg. The Halton runners will then carry the torch to the Burlington kick-off ceremony, which will commence shortly after 9 a.m., at Holy Rosary Catholic School, 261 Plains Rd. E., in Burlington.

At approximately the same time, the Oakville participants will leave W.H. Morden Public School and head west to meet up with the Burlington run at Fothergill Woods Park (Amanda Crescent and New Street in Burlington) for a lunch, with festivities provided by Halton Law Enforcement. There will not be a kick-off event in Oakville.

In Milton, the kick-off event will be at Robert Baldwin Public School (186 Wilson Dr., Milton). The North run will start with its own opening ceremony at Robert Baldwin Public School. Milton’s post-run barbecue will be held at Halton Regional Police, Division #12, at 490 Childs Dr.

Chief Gary Crowell and Halton District School Board Director of Education Wayne Joudrie, along with representatives from other participating organizations, will attend the opening ceremony at Holy Rosary Catholic School. Sue Roszell, Principal of Student Services, will attend the kick-off event at Robert Baldwin Public School, along with Special Olympian representatives and members from the Halton Police Force.

Spectators are encouraged to cheer on the participants along the route.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run, in partnership with the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, encompasses a variety of fundraising initiatives that benefit the athletes in Ontario with an intellectual disability who are involved in Special Olympics programs.
