September 28, 2010: Halton District School Board is proud that two of its public schools – Brookville and Kilbride – will be celebrating their 50th anniversaries and Abbey Lane its quarter-century anniversary this year, with ceremonies being held at each building to highlight the special occasion.
On November 21, 1960 Brookville Public School opened on Guelph Line in the community of Nassagaweya. Moving day was Friday, October 9. It was more of a fun day for the kids as they helped load their belongings onto school buses and moved to the new site. Enrollment that year was 274.
Brookville will he holding a recognition ceremony on Thursday, October 7, 5-8 p.m. with an open house, reception, and dedication of the school bell and the placing of a time capsule, to be opened in 2060. To learn more about the festivities, call Brookville Public School at 905-854-2424.
Kilbride Public School opened in 1960 as a replacement for the original schoolhouse. The first students of Kilbride went to school in a one-room schoolhouse, built in 1873, that sits directly beside Kilbride PS. The first staff included a principal's assistant, a music supervisor and a nurse.
Kilbride will be holding a 2 p.m. recognition ceremony on Saturday, October 16. There will be a message from the Board’s new Director of Education David Euale, a performance by the school’s Intermediate choir, a slide show and the opening of a time capsule from 1985. To learn more about the festivities, call Kilbride Public School at 905-335-6394.
Abbey Lane Public School opened in the Glen Abbey community in 1986/87 as a Kindergarten to Grade 5 school. By 1999, the population had grown enough to warrant the addition of another wing and a larger gymnasium in order to accommodate Grades 6 through 8. This year, Abbey Lane is one of the Oakville sites for all-day Kindergarten. Abbey Lane will be holding a celebration on Wednesday, October 6 at 6 p.m. with coffee and cake. Call Abbey Lane Public School at 905-827-5552 for more information.
