Too late to qualify in winter sports for Board

February 19, 2013: The impact of the recent labour situation has brought an early end to the winter competition season for a number of Halton District School Board sports.

“Sports such as boys basketball, girls volleyball, boys and girls hockey has concluded for Halton District School Board member schools with respect to qualifying for GHAC and the OFSAA Championships,” says David Euale, Director of Education for the Halton District School Board.  “While two high school hockey teams are currently participating in exhibition games, teams are no longer in a position to meet the qualification requirements for OFSAA due to timing.”

GHAC (Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference) and OFSAA (Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations) coordinate regional team sports competitions throughout the province.  Policies regarding practices and competitions are established for all member boards.  For the Halton District School Board, those practices and competition schedules were interrupted due to the unavailability of teachers, supervisors and coaches for extra-curricular activities earlier this winter.

“In an effort to provide our Halton District School Board teams with closure to the winter season,” says Euale, “we are working toward an opportunity to convene an exhibition style final tournament in March, should sufficient numbers of Halton District School Board teams be interested.”

“The Halton District School Board has directed the development of a policy to outline strategies to secure supervision for extra-curricular activities, including the greater involvement by volunteers,” says Euale.  “We anticipate the implementation of these procedures within the next few weeks to support some spring events.”
