June 24, 2010: The Halton District School Board is proud to announce two local students’ works of art have been selected to appear in a 2011 national calendar, as part of the environment-focused Get to Know Program.
Shirley Su of Lester B. Pearson High School, with her artwork entitled Northern Landscape, and Quinn Dalgarno of Abbey Park High School, with his photograph entitled, After the Rain, will appear in the 2011 Get To Know Program calendar.
The Get to Know Program – created by acclaimed Canadian artist Robert Bateman to inspire youth to embrace the environment – had invited students, 19 and under, to submit artwork, a piece of writing or photographs about wildlife or biodiversity online.
Meanwhile, during a June 6 event held by Mayor Cam Jackson and Ian Ross, Executive Director of the Burlington Art Centre, local Get To Know Program contest entrants were chosen and received a framed and signed Robert Bateman print of a blue heron and a gift certificate from the Burlington Art Centre.
Those chosen were Pearson's Shirley Su, Sophie Look-Achoy from Nelson High School (Collage Of Fruit) and Cole Jones, George Kennedy Public School (Sleeping Red Foxes). Jung Hyun Oh of Aldershot High School and Sarah Wong of Nelson High School received honourable mention.
The Halton District School supports this environmental education and awareness initiative.
The Robert Bateman Get to Know Program has been inspiring connections between children and nature in the outdoors for more than a decade. Bateman believes having students learn local species' names and characteristics will create increased awareness and understanding of wildlife.
