Abbey Park’s TREE conference a green success

Earth Day was celebrated at many schools across the Halton District School Board on Wednesday, April 22, including a student organized and run event at Abbey Park High School in Oakville – titled the TREE Conference.
TREE stands for Together Reaching Environmental Excellence – and its intension was to inspire positive environmental change through innovation sessions and workshops. In total ten Oakville high schools sent 20 students each to engage in hands on and informative sessions. The list of sessions was impressive including keynote speaker David Noble, founder of 2degreesC, who has worked extensively with young people in the global effort to resolve climate change. Other workshops topics included vermicomposing and organic diversion, wind turbines, recycling, environmental assessment, and eating locally.
Students were reminded it was a BYOM (Bring Your Own Mug) event, which helped reduce recycling and waste from lunch significantly. Even the names tags worn by participants reflected their environmental commitment.
