Halton Children’s Water Festival
Over 3,600 elementary school students attended the Halton Children’s Water Festival which ran from September 23-26, 2008.
The third annual Halton Children’s Water Festival provided Grades 2 to 5 students with the opportunity to learn about the importance of ground and surface water at Kelso Conservation Area. The event was co-hosted by Conservation Halton and Halton Region, and held in partnership with the Halton District School Board, the Halton Catholic District School Board, and the Town of Oakville.
The Festival consisted of more than 50 activity centres that provided unique opportunities to learn about water in a fun and interactive way while covering Ontario curriculum requirements. The activity centres were staffed by approximately 200 trained high school student volunteers.
Students learned about five central water related themes:
-
Water science and technology: students learned about the water cycle, the physical science of ground and surface water, the treatment and distribution systems and the interactions between water and technology in their daily lives.
-
Water protection: students learn about protecting and managing drinking water sources and investigate how human activities can impact water sources.
-
Water health and safety: students learn about the role of water in human health.
-
Water conservation: students learn ways of conserving water in homes, schools and communities.
-
Water stewardship: students learn about the history of water, the relationship between people and water and how they can become water stewards in their communities.
The overwhelmingly positive and appreciative comments from students and parents emphasized the success and value of this event. Look for its return on September 22-25, 2009.
