Nelson High School students in Mr Pope's leadership class were featured on CBC TV News on the issue of leadership in the upcoming federal election.
What do you expect from our new prime minister? How about, integrity, dedication, keeping promises and having goals? If these traits sound right to you then you would agree with the grade eleven leadership classes at Nelson High School.
Students of Nelson High School’s grade eleven leadership classes were featured last week (Wednesday, September 24) on the Canada Votes section of CBC News. The students were given the opportunity to discuss in a classroom situation what traits are important to have in a leadership role as they were taped by a film crew.
Canada Votes is a daily program on the CBC News which focuses on issues surrounding the up-coming election.
Kyle Pope, the class teacher, managed to secure his students this opportunity after discussing the importance of youth in our elections with CBC correspondent, Colleen Jones. Pope says that this experience allowed his students to apply the leadership concepts that they learn in his class to a real life setting as well as communicate their ideas to a wider audience.
Pope believes that his class is important because it teaches students to improve pre-existing leadership skills as well as realize their natural abilities. He aims to provide his students with hands-on opportunities to showcase and hone their leadership.
The class will be running the upcoming Terry Fox Carnival to raise money as well as attending conferences. You can check out the clip by following this link: http://www.cbc.ca/news/canadavotes/audiovideo/
