Post's Corners Public School thinks ‘We’ first
Students learn about Think: We

Nov. 23, 2011

As a way to highlight last week’s Bullying Prevention and Awareness Week, Oakville’s Post's Corners Public School invited Free The Children share its Think:We presentation with students and staff.

The Think:We idea is to think of others, show and give respect, to do random acts of kindness, willingly volunteer time, care about your local community and international community, and understand not all children have the similar opportunities.

The speakers shared the story of Craig Kielburger, founder of Free The Children, and used a volunteer from the audience to act out a few of the key moments in his early beginnings in creating the organization.

Jane Lewis, principal of Post's Corners, explains Think: We initiatives focus on teaching students to become future leaders. Students developed a sense of responsibility for global citizenship, local needs and their school environment. She said students learn taking action can be as simple as being kind to someone on the school ground, holding a door open for someone or getting involved in social justice causes like the environment, poverty or child labour.

“We have seen a significant difference in the growth and maturity of our intermediate students since becoming part of this program, and we are confident when we send them off to high school, they will be leaders there,” Lewis said.

To further build on the theme of acting unselfishly, Post's Corners Public School is raising money to contribute to a school in Haiti that is currently under construction, and helping the local Fair Share food bank. It has already surpassed its goals, having raised $9,500 for the Haiti school, and collecting 1,400 food items and $1,100 for the food bank.
