On Monday, June 13, 2011, students from the Halton District School Board participated in the annual Special Athletes’ Track Meet at Iroquois Ridge High School.

This was the 24th year for this all-day event, a Halton tradition that integrates a competition for athletes with physical challenges concurrently with a junior track meet for the Oakville area schools.

More than 100 special athletes participated. Coaches, school staff, friends, family members and volunteers provided support and encouragement for the athletes.

The special athletes’ events included running races, distance and precision throws, a slalom event for students with wheelchairs and T-ball. In addition to these competitive events, athletes may take part in four participation events: the four-person team relay, the 50-metre assisted roll for students with wheelchairs, the Boccia ball throw and a Frisbee throw.

This event provides special athletes with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills and celebrate their successes with fellow students, friends and family.
