To resounding applause from his family, teachers and fellow students, Grade 4 student Owen Millar received the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal on Friday afternoon for his work in fundraising for cancer charity.
Making the ceremony even more special was that it was a surprise to the Kilbride Public School student, who was personally presented the recognition from Minister of Labour Halton MP Lisa Raitt.
Millar’s uncle died of osteogenic sarcoma cancer in 1997 at the age of 14 and the family fundraised for cancer initiatives over the years in his honour. But the enthusiasm to raise funds began to fade by 2011, at which point Owen wanted to stimulate the fundraising campaign, which included a walkathon. And did he ever, as he surpassed his $1,000 goal and raised $3,500 at age 7.
Millar said he was shocked when he received the award.
“I seriously didn’t know anything about the medal.”
When asked why he fundraised money for cancer research, he said, “I just want to save lives.”
Millar’s parents hope their son’s accomplishments inspires others.
“It’s amazing; I’m at a loss for words,” Jennifer Millar-Giudice said.
Said father David: “We’re proud he was even nominated for this prestigious award.”
Principal Dave Swanson said Millar is a good example to other students.
“Owen is outgoing, very social, mature and sensitive to other kids feelings and needs,” said Swanson.
