Burlington is the latest Halton community to celebrate the building of two new public schools, with groundbreaking ceremonies happening in October.
On Thursday, October 20, 2011, a ceremony was held for its newest elementary school in the Alton community. This new elementary school will help address growth occurring in north Burlington. Construction began immediately, with the official opening anticipated for September 2012.
The three-storey school will accommodate 700 students and feature barrier-free access for students and visitors, bus drop off area and kindergarten drop off area, instructional areas with natural light, networked computers, a double gym, air conditioning with individual classroom controls and a full passenger elevator.
Thursday, October 27, 2011 marked the official groundbreaking of the new joint community facility in Burlington’s Alton community. The $40.2 million project includes a three-storey secondary school that will accommodate approximately 1,200 students when it opens in the fall of 2013.
The school is one part of the community complex, which will also include a 7,000-square-foot public library and a recreation centre with five competition-size gyms. By combining these facilities and sharing resources, the Halton District School Board, Burlington Public Library and the City of Burlington are able to reduce the overall design and construction costs while providing important services to the community.
The location of this shared facility is Dundas Street and Tim Dobbie Way.
“We, at the Halton District School Board, are proud to break ground on a new elementary and secondary school in north Burlington to meet the growing population in Burlington,” says David Euale, Director of Education. “The two schools under construction will meet the needs of more than 1,900 students in up-to-date facilities that will provide a quality education experience. Of special significance is the secondary school, involving an innovative partnership with the City of Burlington and the Burlington Public Library, which will give students the best opportunities for success.”
