Families with JK/SK Children with Special Needs

Parent meeting concerning transition for JK/SK students with special needs

On Thursday March 1, 2012, the Halton District School Board will host an evening information session for parents highlighting the transition process to JK/SK for students with special needs. 

Location:  Bruce Trail Public School (Milton)
Date:  Thursday March 1, 2012
Time:  7– 9 p.m.

Topics will include: 

• From Registration to First Day
• Planning for Students with Special Needs
• C.C.A.C. (Community Care Access Centre)
• SEAC – Special Education Advisory Committee

  • Ensuring a well-planned and organized start to the school year is critical for children with special needs. Schools keep families informed about the requirements and procedures necessary for September enrollment. Below is a sample school checklist that identifies some of the requirements.
  • Kindergarten registration advertised 
  • Parents complete registration and Special Needs Information forms
  • Parents are invited to the Transition to Kindergarten parent winter meeting
  • With parental consent, an observation visit to the pre-school setting arranged for school staff and appropriate support staff
  • In-school case conferences arranged, with parental consent, to discuss student’s strengths and needs; relevant professionals invited (e.g. Community Care
    Access Centre, Halton Pre-School Speech & Language, Pre-school Autism Services, Erin Oak, Halton Children & Youth Services, Pre-school Resources Teachers etc.)
  • Referrals made to C.C.A.C. for Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy or Speech Services, as appropriate
  • In-school case manager assigned
  • With parental consent, relevant assessments and/or discharge reports from pre-school settings and services collected
  • Consultation from Pre-School Services is available upon request following school start
  • On-going case conferences held as needed
  • Communication with parents maintained Special Needs
