Lorne Skuce Public School, located in the Town of Oakville, will be a grade 1-3 French Immersion School with 164 students. Each child will receive a half-day of instruction in English and a half-day in French. The school will serve a diverse community of students and families living in North West Oakville. The community includes many families new to Oakville looking for a challenging bilingual program for their children.
We will move once again after the 2009-2010 school year to our new school, as yet unnamed, in the Palermo area of Oakville (Bronte Rd. and Dundas) on Valleyridge Drive. We will open in September 2010 serving approximatel 550 students studying in either a straight English or a French Immersion program.
Approach and philosophy …
The principal and staff will take a systemic approach and put structures in place to deliver excellent programs that support students to achieve academic success and be the “best they can be.” We’ll do this through collaborative planning, sharing ideas, a balanced literacy program and believing that all students can learn. Our core business is to help students by not giving up on them, by trying different methods until they succeed. The staff will develop curriculum maps that outline specific skills that will be taught at each grade. This will allow them to make sure that all the skills are taught and reinforced and that there is a common language about expectations and skills across the grades and classes. There will be grade and division meetings to determine learning expectations by term, assessment of student performance, to set targets for individual student and class improvement, and to explore ways of supporting the children.
Schools with high confidence ratings...
n Have significant parent and community involvement
n Exhibit openness, warmth and caring
n Systematically do “need sensing” to find out what parents and others in the community want from schools.
n Work hard at building and retaining the confidence of our community.
To inspire confidence we will:
n Develop clear goals, and then communicate these goals within our school and community
n Involve staff and the community in developing a vision and goals for our school
n Have high quality curriculum and extra-curricular programs
n Develop a safe and orderly school environment
A School is more than “Bricks and Mortar”
Three components to a successful school experience: healthy confident students eager to learn, an engaging program delivered by a professional staff and an involved supportive parent community.
With your involvement we can build a caring, inclusive community where high levels of learning are the norm for all our students.
