This is our fourth year providing Sheridan students with a Healthy Snack.
Last year, our dedicated volunteers served over 13,000 nutritious snacks to the students at our school. As well, our program places a Healthy Basket in each class (which students have access to every day of the school week).
Snacks range from apple slices and cream cheese on crackers, an assortment of salads, wraps with salsa and assorted veggies with hummus dip. Our baskets are filled with tuna snack kits, a variety of Granola bars, fruit slices in juice, unsweetened applesauce and fresh fruit.
Our snack program is important to the culture of our school. You may be surprised to know that:
- 1 in 8 children are not eating the minimum 5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day
- Recent data shows at least 2 children in every classroom do not have enough breakfast, lunch or snack to sustain them an entire school day
- 50% of Principals surveyed last spring noticed an overall improvement in student behaviour and 45% noted a significant decrease in aggression as a result of their Student Nutrition Program
How are we funded?
Halton Food For Thought (HFFT) is an amazing organization who provides the main support for our programs. HFFT’s mission statement is to inspire children and youth to make healthy food choices vital to their development by providing inclusive access to nutritious foods throughout the school day. As for the other portion of our funding, we rely on generous Sheridan families like yours! Click here for a list of items we frequently use at Sheridan.
We thank you for supporting this wonderful program!
Fresh Fruit and Vegetables

During the fall, our school receives a weekly shipment of either a fruit or vegetable from a local Halton farm. So far, we have received fresh-picked carrots, cucumbers, apples and peppers! Thank you to Lorna Wilson, our Farm to School Co-ordinator! Lorna was once a Halton farmer herself and her contacts are very generous!
Volunteering Opportunities
In order to keep these amazing programs running, we need your help! We are currently looking for one volunteer to work in our kitchen on Wednesdays from 9AM-11AM. As you may know, we have had to close the Thursday snack program due to a lack of volunteers – if enough volunteers are interested in working in the kitchen on Thursdays, we could reinstate this program.
Our Volunteers
Danielle Ferguson, Co-ordinator, Shopper and Kitchen Help – Is a busy mom to three kids, two of which are at Sheridan and a teen in his last year at Iroquois Ridge. I love being in the kitchen on Wednesdays with my team of awesome volunteers, we have a great time chatting and preparing Healthy Snacks for all the Sheridan Students.
Ann Carbray, Wednesday Kitchen Help – Ann is a wonderful grandmother of two boys who joined us two years ago when her grandson was in Junior Kindergarten. Ann has agreed to continue to help out even though her grandsons are attending another school. She loves to garden and is a wonderful quilt-maker.
Anna Galanter, Wednesday Kitchen Help – Anna joined our team last year when her youngest daughter joined Sheridan in Mr. Stone’s Kindie class. Anna is a lot of fun to have around in the kitchen, always with a big smile on her face! Anna also has a young son who is in Grade Three at Munn’s.
Andrea Rowe, Wednesday Kitchen Help – along with helping out in our kitchen, she can be found in Mrs. Lovell’s Kindergarten class reading with the Kindies, she is the Sheridan School Council’s Treasurer, and you will see her at all of Sheridan events. She is a Mom to two active boys!
Mrs. Mitchell’s Grade Four Class – what would we do without our Grade Fours! This enthusiastic group shows up every Wednesday ready to serve snacks to their fellow students. They make sure that every student has a chance to snack on something nutritious or try out something new!
Thanks to all our volunteers and please consider joining us!
