Dear Boyne Families,

It is an honour and privilege to serve the Boyne Community as principal. I received the warmest of welcome from staff and students alike and these past two days have felt like a “homecoming”.  To see how the students have grown in the last four years is a joy. The best was to hear them say “Are you Mrs. Khan? I remember you!” I look forward to connecting with all of you at some point in the future.

Boyne Community Outreach Night

We are excited to share that Boyne will be hosting a Community Outreach Event on Thursday, April 9th from 5:00 P.M. to approximately 7:15 P.M. 

The goal of this event is to bring our community together by connecting families with a range of local partners, as well as with one another. Confirmed partners include Milton Police, Milton Fire, the Ministry of Transportation, and Halton Conservation, with additional community supports such as an optician, dental office, and other healthcare providers expected to join. 

These partners will be available to share information about their services and respond to questions from families.

The Boyne Book of Records is BACK! 

We are thrilled to announce the return of one of our favourite traditions: The Boyne Book of Records! Originally launched when our school first opened, this event celebrates our students' incredible talents and competitive spirit. This year, we’re bringing it back as an annual fundraiser to support the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF).

What is the Halton Learning Foundation?

HLF plays a vital role in our community by ensuring every student has what they need to succeed. They provide support for:

• Field trip fees so no student misses out on learning outside the classroom.
• Walmart gift cards for essential clothing, food, and personal hygiene items.
• Emergency funding to eliminate financial barriers to education.
• HLF Month is our opportunity to raise awareness and funds to support families right here in our own backyard who require a helping hand.

How the Fundraiser Works

Throughout the month of April, you can sign up to compete in various skills competitions held across every division.

• Student Participation: A minimum donation of $2.00 per event is required to sign up. If you're feeling extra generous, we happily accept larger donations!
• Staff Participation: We’d love to see our staff get involved! Teachers and staff can join the fun with a minimum donation of $25.00.
• Multiple Entries: You are welcome to sign up for more than one competition, provided a donation is made for each event.

Important Dates

• Donations (April): All sign-ups and donations must be made via School Cash Online (Cashless). The portal will be open for the entire month of April.
• The Main Event (May & June): The actual competitions will take place throughout May and June. Keep your eyes peeled for the specific schedule and event dates coming soon!

Additional Mental Health & Well-Being Information Session for Parents/Guardians - April 14

The Halton District School Board, in partnership with Halton Region Public Health, Halton Regional Police Service and the Halton Catholic District School Board, are pleased to invite you to an upcoming Mental Health & Well-Being Information Session for parents/guardians on Growing Up Online: What Parents/Guardians Need to Know About Screen Time, Mental Health and Safety. The session will be held in-person on Tuesday, April 14 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Halton Regional Centre (1151 Bronte Road, Oakville). 

• Growing Up Online: What Parents/Guardians Need to Know About Screen Time, Mental Health and Safety
• Tuesday, April 14, 2026 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
• In-Person at the Halton Regional Centre (1151 Bronte Road, Oakville)
• Registration is required. 

During this in-person session, speakers will explore what is happening in children’s developing brains, online trends and safety concerns, as well as practical ways families can set healthy boundaries. Parents/guardians will learn about simple strategies, safety guidance and local resources to help their children navigate technology with greater confidence and balance. 

Registration Details:  Registration is required as space is limited. Families can register through the registration form until the session reaches capacity. Attendance will be taken at the door and entry will be limited to those who have registered in advance. Please note that childcare will not be provided.

Mental Health & Well-Being Resources:  The mental health and well-being of our students and families is important. We encourage all families to view the HDSB’s Mental Health & Well-Being webpage which has information for parents/guardians and students on mental health, ways to support positive mental health and well-being and how to get additional support at school and in the community.

Safety at drop off and dismissal: 

Students must use sidewalks and are encouraged to avoid the area by the parking lot. We are asking all students to use the south sidewalk by the fence, to avoid crossing at the entrance to the parking lot. Please do not cross between buses. Walking or riding is the healthiest and safest way to get your child to school. If your child is eligible for the bus, please send them on the bus instead of driving. This also helps reduce traffic.

From the Principal’s Desk

This is my last Principal update! My last day is on Tuesday March 31st and I am approaching it with mixed feelings. I am looking forward to new adventures, but will be sad to say goodbye to so many wonderful students, staff and families. I often think it would be so fun to record parts of our days to show parents how much care and attention our staff have for our students. This is a lovely place to work, filled with many shared joys! I have loved working at Boyne and know that I am leaving you in good hands with Ms. Khan, Ms. Gardi and Ms. Miclash. We have a Boyne cheer - Once a Boyne Bear, Always a Boyne Bear and this is how I feel as my last day approaches. I will always carry fond memories of the wonderful community of Boyne with me. Thank you and best wishes!

2026-2027 School Year Calendar Final Approval

The 2026-2027 school year calendar has received final approval from the Ontario Ministry of Education. View the 2026-2027 School Year Calendar

The school year calendar is developed with input from the School Year Calendar Committee consisting of representatives from school communities including parents/guardians and employee groups. Halton District School Board Trustees approved the calendar dates for the 2026-2027 school year at a Board meeting in February.

The calendar includes Professional Activity (PA) days, school breaks and holidays. The first day of school for the 2026-2027 school year is Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026.

Safety at drop off and dismissal: 

This week we have had 2 community members contact us as they are upset with how unsafe drop off and pick up is. One home owner has her driveway blocked by cars picking up students and she has plans to report this to the police. A parent also emailed us (see below for an excerpt) and highlighted concerns about cars in the parking lot. We do restrict cars in the parking lot to those with accessibility needs or students with special needs who are given a parking pass. Please respect this. There are many students around the parking lot at the end of the day and the way we can make this safer is by reducing the number of moving vehicles. If you have a parking pass and park in the back of the lot, please do not exit the parking lot until 3:30pm when pedestrian traffic is reduced. We have been working with the board to rework how the parking lot is configured to resolve the safety issues at the back crosswalk but in the meantime our collective job is to improve safety, perhaps at the expense of your convenience. 

I am writing to you today to seek clarity regarding the rules and safety protocols for the school’s back parking lot.

As a family that supports the school’s "walk to school" initiative, my two children have walked to Boyne every day since they joined. They consistently use the path and the painted crosswalk in the back parking lot to enter the school grounds. However, they have recently been reporting a significant increase in traffic and vehicle movement during bell times, which was concerning to hear given that the lot is intended for staff use.

Yesterday, I left work early to observe the situation myself, and I was alarmed by what I saw. Despite the "walk to school" promotion, the back area was congested with vehicles. Specifically:

• Obstruction of Crosswalks: I observed a parent in a large grey Ford parked directly across the painted crosswalk. When I politely questioned why she was parked there, she was dismissive and continued to wait for a student while using her phone.
• Unauthorized Idling: Multiple cars were pulling into the back section and turning on their hazard lights, essentially treating the area as a pickup zone.
  

Please note that the back crosswalk is only for pedestrians and no vehicles should not cross until 3:30 once pedestrian traffic has reduced.

This week we learned that Fatimah Khan will be the new Principal of Boyne P.S. as of April 1, 2026.

Dear families,

I am excited to return to the Boyne community as Principal. As a brief introduction,  I have lived in Milton since 2006 with my family and witnessed the successes and growing pains of a burgeoning community which is home to a diverse population.

My biggest joy as Principal will be connecting with students, families and staff as together we will continue to strive for academic achievement while fostering a sense of belonging for all through kindness, connection and community.

Homestay Hosts Needed in Halton

Each year, the HDSB’s International Student Program (ISP) welcomes students into schools, and as a result, our programs benefit, our community benefits and local students create lifelong friendships and global connections. Canada Homestay Network (CHN) is currently looking for hosts in Halton for international students joining the HDSB during the 2026-2027 school year.

The HDSB has received a strong number of applications for the 2026-2027 school year, including several students who will be staying for a shorter period of approximately three to four months. This creates a great opportunity for families who may be interested in short-term hosting.

Hosting an international student is a unique and rewarding experience. You'll give a young learner a life-changing opportunity while creating lasting memories for your own family. As a host, you provide a private bedroom, three daily meals, access to WiFi and laundry and a welcoming, supportive and safe home. CHN offers full training, 24/7 support and a monthly stipend.

CHN will be hosting two virtual information sessions for families interested in learning more about becoming a homestay host:

Reminder re: Supervision times 

Supervision starts at 8:40 am. Please know that students are not able to be in the school or classrooms until the bell rings at 8:40am (unless they are invited early for a team practice.) We are finding that many students are arriving early and they are unsupervised and therefore the responsibility of the parent until 8:40am. After school supervision ends at 3:30pm. Please be sure to arrange a pick up by this time.

Fashion Forward Open Houses

Students can select, at no cost, donated formal wear for upcoming prom/graduation celebrations.  Students will have the opportunity to view and try on formal wear in a friendly and welcoming environment. Students may select from a variety of new and gently-used attire that has been donated for proms, graduations and other special events. Many different styles, colours and sizes of formal dresses will be available as well as suits, shirts, ties, shoes and accessories.

The dates and locations of the Fashion Forward Open Houses to browse for formal wear are the following:

We are excited to share a valuable opportunity to support your child’s well-being. School Mental Health Ontario is offering a free webinar series as part of the By Your Side Learning Hub, designed to help parents and caregivers navigate important topics to support their children’s mental health.  

This expert-led series will provide insights and practical strategies on:  

• balanced device use 
• vaping 
• body image 
• anxiety 

The webinars will also include answers to questions that parents/caregivers can provide ahead of the webinar, giving you the chance to ask questions and gain practical guidance.

From the Principal’s Desk

Our Grade 4s spent a lovely day at Country Heritage Park last week. They were learning about early settlers and here is what some students had to say:

The Grade 4’s went on a field trip to the Country Heritage Park. We learned about how the early settlers lived in Canada back in the late 1800’s. They had Blacksmiths who made tools, rusty horseshoes in different sizes and they also took on the role of a dentist by pulling out people's teeth. We visited an old school house from the late 1800’s. In the school house there were different sections for girls and boys. A punishment for students who misbehaved was placing their heads on a chalkboard and balancing a book on their heads. We also visited the General store where settlers bought and traded items - the prices were so cheap. Finally, we learned about a doctor's role during the 1800’s, including the fact that there was no anesthetic when performing surgery. We realized how different lives were back then compared to now. We saw first hand how it was to live like an early settler for a day.

We also celebrated Pink Shirt Day and our Boyne Bears showed their commitment to Kindness.

Pink shirt day was started by Trevor Price and David Shepherd in Nova Scotia in 2007. It started when a new ninth grade boy came to school wearing a pink shirt. When he walked into school, a bunch of kids snickered and made fun of him because he was a boy, and a boy was wearing pink. Trevor and David couldn't stand this, as they thought that everyone should be able to wear pink, and people don't deserve to feel bullied or hurt. They bought a whole bunch of pink shirts and sent out a message for everyone to wear pink the next day. This is what is now known as the "Sea of Pink," and they teamed up against the bullies. To celebrate, we decorated our 4-1 classroom and learned the difference between being mean, being rude, and being a bully. Police Record Check (PRC) Update for Volunteers – Effective April 1, 2026

In December 2025, the Ontario Ministry of Education introduced amendments to Police Record Check requirements under Ontario Regulation 298/25, effective April 1, 2026. As a result, school boards are now required to obtain a new Police Record Check (PRC) for all school volunteers every five years. A new PRC will also be required if there has been a lapse in submitting the Annual Offence Declaration.

These updated requirements apply to both current and new volunteers and are part of ongoing efforts to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. We sincerely appreciate the time and care our volunteers bring to our school community. Your involvement makes a meaningful difference, and we look forward to welcoming both returning and new volunteers. Oral Health Day at School

Halton Region Public Health updated how dental screening and oral health education are delivered in schools.  Here’s what you need to know:

Oral Health Day is the new name for school visits, which now include dental screenings, fun interactive presentations and classroom activities for kindergarten classes, and oral health care supports for students and their families.

Dental screening by a Registered Dental Hygienist will now take place every two years for JK/SK students. Parents will be notified when our school is scheduled.

Year-round dental screening appointments are available at Public Health Clinics for children and youth aged 0–17. You don’t need to wait for Oral Health Day – book a dental screening today!  Need help paying for dental care? Public Health can support families applying for dental financial assistance programs like Healthy Smiles Ontario and the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Healthy smiles start early—and last a lifetime!

Quit Vaping Parent / Caregiver webinar

The following organization has been approved for distribution in schools:

 “The Quash Program” is inviting all parents and caregivers to join them on March 25th or April 21st for a webinar to gain knowledge and understand your role in addressing youth vaping. The Quash Program is facilitated by the Lung Health Foundation and this event is presented with support from  the Ontario Ministry of Education.

This Quash webinar will boost your knowledge about vaping and its dangers while preparing you to start a judgement-free dialogue with a teen you care about. This webinar is presented by The Quash Program powered by The Lung Health Foundation. The event will cover:

• Introduction to the youth vaping climate
• Health impacts of vaping
• Supportive conversations with youth
• Key elements of a supportive conversation
• Brief conversations toolkit

The webinar will be delivered in English with lived captions. The webinar includes a pre+post poll as well as a post-webinar survey. Following the webinar, registrants will receive a link to the recording and resources available for 3-months to re-watch or watch in case you weren't able to attend.

Safety at drop off and dismissal: 

We would like to introduce Boyne’s crossing guard Mariam Khowaja. She is helping families to cross Farmstead safely. All families are asked to use the crosswalk. We are modeling safety around traffic at all times, and she is there to help keep our Boyne families safe! Thank you Mariam! 

Thank you to everyone who is walking to and from school! We appreciate your help improving safety at Boyne. We are hoping all families that are walking south on Farmstead can use the south sidewalk along the fence. Our most dangerous intersection is the sidewalk across the entrance and exit to the parking lot. Avoiding this area by using the south sidewalk is the safest way to navigate this area. 

Please also be reminded that parents and students are not to cross between buses.

We have a number of students and staff that have anaphylactic allergies. These can be life threatening. Please be sure not to send nuts or nut products to school. Please also check with your child’s teacher to find out what other allergies are present in your child’s class. For example, we have students with an airborne allergy to seafood and shellfish. We had a wonderful day on Wednesday, celebrating Carnaval. Our student leaders did a tremendous job leading activities for our Boyne Bears. Mental Health & Well-Being Information Sessions

The Halton District School Board has announced additional Mental Health & Well-Being Information Sessions for parents/guardians.

The upcoming sessions include: 

• Halton ADAPT -  Tech Overuse and Digital Footprint - Tuesday, Feb. 17 from  6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
• Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Supporting Mental Health and Well-Being - Tuesday, March 3 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.
• Recognizing and Supporting your Child’s Mental Health - Wednesday, March 11 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m.

From the Principal’s Desk

 Thank you to all the families who are continuing to walk to and from school in spite of the weather! 

Families are encouraged to walk to and from school. We were designed as a “walk-to” school and this is the healthiest way to come and go from school.  

We currently have about 1140 students and all of those students are either getting dropped off/picked up or taking a bus at drop off/pick up. We have more than 100 staff who are in need of parking in our parking lot. We frequently do not have enough parking spaces for our staff. 

We wanted to take this opportunity to remind parents that our parking lot is closed to parents, unless the parent has an Ontario Accessibility Parking Permit or a Boyne parking pass. Boyne parking passes are given to parents of students with special needs or to parents of students who have mobility issues due to an injury (e.g., a broken leg). Ontario Accessibility Parking Permits should only be used if the driver is the sole adult coming to pick up as access to the parking spot is for the person to whom the pass was issued. We simply do not have enough space for parent cars in the parking lot, and limiting traffic is a safety measure. 

Parents have been reporting to us that they are receiving tickets for illegally parking during pick up and drop off. For students in Grade 3-8 we suggest finding a meeting spot away from the front of the school. Students can walk there to meet their parents and avoid the area around the school where traffic is heavy. This map shows where there is legal parking around the school.  

Please help us to teach our Boyne Bears how to safely cross the road (with the crossing guard), not to cross between buses, and help them embed healthy habits like walking into their routines. If you need assistance making sure that your family has appropriate winter clothing, please let us know. Thank you for your support making these times of day run smoothly and safely.

Basketball News! 

Congratulations to the senior girls’ basketball team on a phenomenal tournament last night. The girls played hard in the round robin matches demonstrating some basketball. They won all their games and finished first in their pool. In the semi-finals they played Rattlesnake and were dominant and cruised into the championship match. In the finals they played W.I.D. where our girls came out strong, taking a big lead and never looking back. They demonstrated amazing passing, teamwork, and grit. Although W.I.D put up a good fight, our girls weren’t giving up and brought home the GOLD! Shout out to the whole team, as well as Safiyyah, for receiving the tournament MVP! Way to make your whole school proud!

Congratulations to the Senior Boys’ Basketball team. They played so well and took home bronze after some hard fought battles! We are so proud of your team effort and sportsmanship!

As part of HLF Month in April, the Halton Learning Foundation is thrilled to invite HDSB elementary and secondary students to submit their auditions for Students in the Spotlight—an unforgettable evening celebrating the incredible talents of HDSB students and helping raise much-needed funds for HDSB students facing financial barriers to learning. Whether you perform on stage or create visual art, this is your chance to show the world what you can do.

In previous years, stage acts have included dancers, singers, choirs, bands, groups, spoken word and instrumental performances and more.

This year, we’re expanding the spotlight off stage as well! We are giving more students the chance to showcase their visual art talents. Students can now shine through their artwork in the brand-new Art Exhibition. Submissions may include drawings or paintings, handmade crafts or textile art, sculptures or 3D artwork. Surprise us!

Here’s how it works

Fill out the form: Whether it’s a solo or group performance, or sharing your creative artwork, we want to see it! Complete the Registration Form by Wednesday, Feb. 25 at 5:00 p.m. 

Submit your video/artwork: Submit your video (Instructions) or upload your artwork. 

Selected Performers: If you are chosen, you will hit the stage for a LIVE performance or display your artwork in the Art Exhibition on Wednesday, April 29 at Burlington Central High School (1433 Baldwin St, Burlington).

The cold weather has meant that we have had a lot of indoor recesses. Cooped up kids can be hard to teach! In order to give students a chance to move, classes have been enjoying our sensory walks. Director Panel Series:  A More Human Vision of AI

Reminder: HDSB staff, families and community members are invited to the upcoming session of the Director’s Panel Series: A More Human Vision of AI on Monday, Jan. 26 from 6 - 7 p.m. This session will be led by Director of Education Curtis Ennis, Human Rights & Equity Advisor Pardeep Singh Nagra and Associate Director of Education Jennie Petko. This will be a virtual event with the livestream linked on the HDSB website (hdsb.ca). Registration is not required.

Join us for a conversation exploring how artificial intelligence (AI) is showing up all around us and why it is essential for schools, students and families to approach its use with intention, responsibility and a strong sense of humanity. This session will feature industry thought leader Kulbir Colin Singh Dhillon, writer of Soulful AI, to examine how we can ensure emerging technologies reflect humanity rather than replace them. Together, the panel will explore what it means to use and live alongside AI in ways that prioritize empathy, ethics, creativity and purpose so that as technology advances, our humanity advances with it.

Budget Consultation 

 The HDSB is seeking input on the 2026-2027 school year budget to help guide decision-making. Parents/guardians, students, staff and community members are invited to provide input on the budget development process through an online survey by Feb. 1 at 4 p.m.

EQAO Sessions for Parents 

• EQAO Literacy Session for Families: Focus on Reading
  (January 20, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.)
  Join us for a free live webinar about how EQAO assesses students’ reading skills at key stages of their education. EQAO staff will discuss reading samples and questions from the reading components of the primary- and junior-division assessments, and from the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test. Participants will hear how these reading passages and questions help assess the skills students are learning in class. Staff will also highlight valuable insights and resources that can help parents and guardians support their child’s learning.

Happy New Year! 

On December 11th we hosted a grade 7 & 8 intramural volleyball tournament after school that was one fantastic night. We had 72 Boyne students join our event and make teams with their friends. It was a night filled with a lot of joy, laughter, and volleyball. We had graduating Boyne students come back to ref, score, and help with our snackbar as well as some parents come to watch the fun. A group of intermediate students said "This was the best night ever, can we do another one?" and one grade 8 student said "This is a core memory". We look forward to hosting more nights like this for our students in 2026.

Donations of formal wear for HDSB’s Fashion Forward

Fashion Forward is an initiative that provides Halton District School Board students an opportunity to select donated formal wear, at no cost, for their upcoming prom and graduation celebrations. Donations of clean, current-style formal wear for the Fashion Forward program are being accepted until the end of the day on Friday, Jan, 23.

Students are invited to attend any of the Fashion Forward Open Houses held in March and April to view and try on formal wear in a friendly and welcoming environment. Students may select from a variety of new and gently-used attire that has been donated for proms, graduations and other special events. Many different styles, colours and sizes of formal dresses will be available as well as suits, shirts, ties, shoes and accessories.

Out of Area Transfer Requests (2026-2027) - Elementary Schools

Students looking to attend a school other than their home school can do so by completing an Out of Area Transfer Request Application. Applications are being accepted from Jan. 5 - Feb. 27, 2026 and can be submitted to your home school.

The snowfall last week brought a lot of joy to our school community! It also brought a lot of arguing over forts and ice blocks but that is the way it goes in an elementary school field! Spirit Week Dec 15 to 19

Scents at Boyne

Boyne is a scent-reduced school.  Students are asked to please refrain from using colognes, perfumes, body sprays, etc. when you are at school.  Overuse of these scents can cause issues for other students and staff members with asthma or allergies.

Mental Health Support Services for Winter Break

Support Services are available to students year round! If you find yourself in need with your mental health and well-being over the break, you are not alone. Be sure to use one of the resources that are available to you:

Mental Health and Well-being Parent/Caregiver Connections

Mental health and well-being information and resources are provided to students and families on the Mental Health and Well-Being webpage of the HDSB website (hdsb.ca). Resources provided include parent/guardian-specific and student-specific support, information sessions, videos and information on school-based mental health supports.

Resources to support Digital Technology Use

The winter break often provides children and teens with more unstructured time, and this may mean more access to digital technology at home. Providing parents/caregivers with resources to recognize and respond to the overuse of technology can help to support the well-being and mental health of their children. 

Helping your child manage digital technology (available in multiple languages) focuses on: 

• supporting balanced digital technology use - signs of problematic technology use
• what to do if you have concerns about your child’s technology 

Media Smarts is an online resource that can be shared with parents/caregivers to further their learning on balanced digital technology use.

Tissue Boxes and Cutlery

Boyne is seeking donations of kleenex/tissue boxes as well as disposable forks and spoons.  Please drop off in the office if you can help out.

Safety at drop off and dismissal: 

Students must use sidewalks and are encouraged to avoid the area by the parking lot. We are asking all students to use the south sidewalk by the fence, to avoid crossing at the entrance to the parking lot. Please do not cross between buses. Walking or riding is the healthiest and safest way to get your child to school. If your child is eligible for the bus, please send them on the bus instead of driving. This also helps reduce traffic.

All food programs are running as usual for our final week of school before break. We would like a smooth transition for January so our food programs are open for purchase until Wednesday Dec 17th at 10 A.M.  As always, thank you for your continued support!
