CAPIS

The Child & Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Services (CAPIS) program supports children and adolescents receiving care through the inpatient psychiatric unit at Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. The program ensures students are able to continue their learning while receiving care, treatment and stabilization.

Educational programming is provided by a Halton District School Board teacher, who works closely with the student’s home school to support continued learning and facilitate the completion of schoolwork during their hospital stay.

About the Program

CAPIS is a nineteen-bed acute psychiatric inpatient unit that focuses on crisis intervention, assessment and acute stabilization for children and adolescents. Hospital stays are typically short and designed to support immediate mental health needs.

During admission, a multidisciplinary team works collaboratively to support each young person’s care and treatment.

Family Involvement

Family involvement is an important part of the assessment and treatment process. Upon admission to the hospital, family appointments will be arranged and families are expected to attend scheduled meetings and family nights to support their child’s care.

Educational Support

During their stay, students continue to engage in learning activities supported by qualified teachers. Teachers work closely with the student’s home school to coordinate assignments and help students maintain connections with their academic program whenever possible.

Transition and Follow-Up Care

Following hospitalization, students are discharged with recommendations for follow-up care based on their individual needs. This may include connections to community agencies, the family physician, a psychiatrist or specialized treatment programs.
