REACH

Recovery through Education for Adolescents and Children in Halton (REACH) is a day treatment classroom that supports adolescents experiencing mental health concerns that require more intensive support than can be provided in a typical outpatient or high school classroom setting.

The program combines educational programming with therapeutic supports to help students continue their learning while receiving mental health treatment.

About the Program

REACH serves students in Grades 7–12. The program provides a structured learning environment that supports both academic progress and mental health recovery.

Students participate in a program led by two qualified teachers and an educational assistant. Instruction emphasizes academic learning alongside activities that support Healthy Active Living.

Therapeutic Supports

Students are supported by a multidisciplinary clinical team associated with Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital. This team may include:

  • Social workers
  • Psychiatrists
  • Child and youth counsellors

Therapeutic interventions may include cognitive behavioural therapy, family therapy and other supports based on individual needs.

Referrals and Admission

Referrals to the REACH program are made through an assessment completed by a student's health care professional. Students are referred to the program through Halton Healthcare’s outpatient mental health services department.

Upon admission, family appointments are arranged and families are expected to participate in programming to support their child's treatment.

Length of Program

The typical length of stay in the REACH program is approximately six weeks. The length of stay may vary depending on the individual needs of each student.

Transition Back to School

Following their time in the program, students return to their home school. The REACH teacher provides academic recommendations to support the transition back to school, while the therapeutic team may provide follow-up care recommendations to community agencies, the family physician, a psychiatrist or specialized programs.
