In the Halton District School Board, all students take Core French from Grades 1 - 8, unless the students are enrolled in French Immersion or Extended French. In Grades 1, 2 and 3, students have Core French for 40 minutes per week. (The Halton District School Board will fully implement this program by the fall of 2020.)
The Core French program continues with 120 minutes per week of instruction in Grade 4, 160 minutes per week of instruction in Grade 5 and 200 minutes per week of instruction in Grades 6-8. The Core French program must provide a minimum of 600 hours of French instruction by the end of Grade 8.
The Ontario FSL Curriculum document provides grade-specific expectations for Grades 4 to 8 with a focus on developing student competence in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The Primary Core French program focuses on listening and speaking which will be assessed as students begin to develop oral communication skills. Students will actively participate in activities designed to increase their confidence when using French outside of the classroom.
