Letter to parents and guardians February 25, 2015: Revised Health & Physical Education Curriculum.
This is not a new curriculum. The revised curriculum is an update of the previous Health and Physical Education curriculum which has been in use in Ontario schools since 1998, and has been under review since 2007. In 2010 some changes were made to the Health and Physical Education curriculum, but some areas remained under review. The 2015 curriculum completes the review of the curriculum and introduces some new expectations in the health component.
For the remainder of this school year, the 2010 curriculum continues to be used by teachers, as changes are not in effect until September.
Details of the Ministry's Health and Physical Education curriculum (2015) can be found online at:
Training for delivery of the revised curriculum has been provided, by the Ministry, to a Board team consisting of program staff, Equity and Inclusive Education staff, our Mental Health Lead, and classroom teachers. In the fall, and throughout the 2015-2016 school year, this team will train teachers who will be delivering the revised curriculum. This training will precede the implementation of revised areas of the health strands.
The Halton District School Board encourages all families to review the Elementary curriculum and Secondary curriculum which addresses a range of important topics such as online safety, healthy relationships and consent, mental health and student diversity.
