What Is a Scholarship?
Scholarships and bursaries are financial awards that help cover the cost of education—and unlike loans, they don’t need to be repaid. Some are one-time awards, while others can be renewed over multiple years.
Types of Scholarships
There are many kinds of scholarships available, including:
- Entrance Scholarships – Based on your Grade 12 marks
- Leadership & Community Involvement Awards – For volunteering, initiative and impact
- Needs-Based Bursaries – Based on family financial situation
- Special Criteria Awards – Based on culture, background, employer affiliations or unique accomplishments
- Program-Specific Scholarships – Linked to areas such as STEM, arts, or athletics
- Post-secondary Awards – Many more opportunities become available once you begin your post-secondary journey
Who Can Apply?
To be eligible for school-supported nominations, students must typically:
- Be enrolled as a full-time secondary student
- Demonstrate the school’s graduate outcomes, such as:
-
- Respecting diversity
- Engaging positively in school and community
- Communicating effectively
- Applying critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Making healthy choices
- Acting with confidence and independence
What You’ll Need
To prepare for applications, be sure to keep track of:
- Awards and recognitions (in school and in the community)
- Volunteer hours and community service
- Enrichment opportunities (contests, workshops, conferences, etc.)
- Extracurricular activities and leadership roles
You may also be asked to provide:
- A current transcript (ask your school’s Student Services team in advance)

Some scholarships require a formal school nomination. These are reviewed by a school-based team and may include an internal selection process. To be considered for nomination, submit your application materials well before the deadline.
