More than 4,000 students from Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton and Oakville attended Grade 12 in the Halton District School Board this year. Of all these students, many graduates are preparing to embark on a new journey at university or college in the fall.
To celebrate the accomplishments of our graduates, we’ve profiled a few of the many students from across our Board who are receiving scholarships and awards for post-secondary education this year.
Urmi Sheth, from Oakville Trafalgar Secondary School, is a recipient of the York University Governors' Awards of Distinction: Betty-Jean and John M. Bankes Scholarship. This award has been made possible through the generosity of John Bankes, a member of the University's Board of Governors, and that of his family. The award honours their parents for their long-standing encouragement to family and others to pursue higher education.
“I am incredibly honoured to be the recipient of this scholarship,” Sheth says. “I am really grateful for the immense support and guidance my parents and teachers have given me over the past four years, as well as the strong network of peers I have had throughout high school.”
What advice does Sheth have for students?
“To get involved because many of my best experiences in high school happened because of the activities I was involved in, from the debate team to student council to Relay for Life,” she says. “I was able to push myself and take risks in ways I wouldn't have been able to in the classroom, and I'm certain that my extracurriculars had a significant impact on my growth as an individual.”
Sheth is studying Global Health at York University in the fall.
We wish all our graduates success as they begin their post-secondary studies.
