Halton District School Board students performed well during the 60th annual Bay Area Science and Engineering Fair (BASEF), which was held virtually in April due to the Ontario school closure and public health restrictions. Cash prizes, awards and scholarships totaling approximately $225,000 were given to students participating in BASEF.
In the Halton District School Board, 108 students and 20 schools participated, with three students winning awards. They were:
BASEF 60th Anniversary Pinnacle Third Best in Fair:
- Caroline Huang, Grade 9 student at Abbey Park High School, for her project, ‘Computing Neuroregeneration: Simulating Cognitive Function with Physarum AI.’
Intel International Science and Engineering Fair Awards:
- Caroline Huang, from Abbey Park High School, with her project, ‘Computing Neuroregeneration: Simulating Cognitive Function with Physarum AI’.
- Lily Smales, Grade 9 student at Oakville Trafalgar High School, for her project ‘Using Machine Learning to Determine the Composition of New Vaccines for Novel Viruses.’
Canada Wide Science Fair:
- Vesa Barileva, Grade 9 student at Abbey Park High School, for her project, ‘Transforming industrial food waste into biodegradable food packaging films’.
Due to the pandemic, the Canada Wide and International Fairs were cancelled so trips could not be awarded.
