HDSB Human Rights Symposium 2021 - Rights of the Child

The Halton District School Board will once again host the Human Rights Symposium on Friday, Jan. 22, 2021 to engage in vital conversations and challenge thinking. The theme of this year’s event is the Rights of the Child. HDSB Trustees have declared the week of Jan. 18-22 as “Rights of the Child Week” in the HDSB for schools and staff to spend time learning about the rights of children.

On Friday, Jan. 22, 2021, HDSB schools are invited to view the livestream of the Human Rights Symposium and hear keynote speakers Michel Chikwanine and Stephen Lewis in their classrooms. The event will be from 9:30 a.m. - 2:30 p.m. The 2021 Symposium will be a virtual event for HDSB students (Grade 7-12) and staff only.

  • Michel Chikwanine: Peace advocate and former child soldier. His passion and belief in the possibility for change makes him a remarkable individual and humanitarian.

  • Stephen Lewis: Celebrated humanitarian and former United Nations Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. He is one of Canada’s most influential commentators on social affairs, international development and human rights.

Note: Some of the content covered in the keynote presentation may not be suitable for younger students, therefore the event is intended for students in Grade 7 and up.

How do students and staff watch the Human Rights Symposium?

Information on how to access the event will be shared with students and staff. Registration is not required.

Rights of the Child Week in the HDSB (Jan. 18-22)

During “Rights of the Child Week” (Jan. 18-22) in the HDSB, students and staff are encouraged to share what they are learning on social media with the hashtag: #RightsofChildHDSB. Staff have been provided with resources to engage students from Kindergarten to Grade 12 in learning about the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

Human rights is the work and responsibility of all members of society and the Human Rights Symposium provides an opportunity for our HDSB community to examine important issues impacted by equality and the human condition. During “Rights of the Child Week” and at the Human Rights Symposium, we hope that students and educators can examine important issues and drive actionable change as we engage in focused learning about the rights of children.
