Academics

Every HDSB student experience begins with a strong academic base.

Aldershot offers many unique pathways for every student to pursue their passions through a wide range of class offerings and hands-on opportunities. From woodworking and autoshop, modern science labs, to music and visual arts—including a unique in-school pottery kiln—there’s something for every interest. Modern science labs further support curiosity and discovery across disciplines.

In addition to the world-class Ontario curriculum offerings, students benefit from a wide range of specialized programs at Aldershot.

I-STEM

The I-STEM program is a one-of-a-kind regional interdisciplinary program that provides experiential learning opportunities connecting Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM).

Developed in partnership with top universities and industry partners across the province, Aldershot's I-STEM program invites students from all over Ontario to take part in a program that elevates critical thinking, creative problem solving, collaboration skills, presentation skills and technical abilities.

Advanced Placement (AP)

Advanced Placement is the most widespread university preparation program in the world, recognized by universities in Canada, the United States and in over 60 countries around the world. AP courses offer university-level content to students in secondary school, allowing students to study topics in greater depth, supporting the development of strong academic skills in research, critical thinking and time management.

Aldershot offers the Grade 9 entry AP preparatory program, AP courses and self-study model learning opportunities. 

Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM)

The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) program is a specialized program for Grade 11 and 12 students that allows students to focus their learning on a specific economic sector while meeting the requirements to graduate from secondary school.

These programs enable students to gain sector specific skills and knowledge in engaging, career-related learning environments, and prepare in a focused way for graduation and post-secondary education, training or employment.

Aldershot offers a broad selection of SHSM programs to their students, including: Arts & Culture: Media Production, Health and Wellness: Focus on Fitness, Motive Power and Engineering (Truck and Coach and Heavy Equipment) and an Environment ECO studies program run in association with the Royal Botanical Gardens (RBG) in Burlington.

Rebecca Newcombe is a visionary educational leader with over 25 years of experience dedicated to academic excellence, student engagement and inclusive school culture.

Currently serving as the System Principal of Secondary School Programs & Student Success, Rebecca has spent the last three years leading district-wide secondary programs and achievement initiatives. She is a builder of communities, a champion of diverse pathways, and is uniquely positioned to lead the opening of a new secondary school.

Rebecca’s leadership is anchored in an unwavering commitment to academic excellence, centering student success through engaging and inclusive classroom practices that ensure every  learner is empowered to reach their highest potential.

Building a Modern School Identity

Rebecca is energized by the opportunity to design a school culture that balances academic rigor,  with real-world application.  In addition to building the durable skills that students need to be responsive to an ever changing world - critical thinking, discerning information, synthesizing complex problems, collaboration and communication. She is particularly excited to implement:

  • High Performing Athlete (HPA) Programs: Supporting student-athletes in achieving excellence both in their sport and in the classroom through a flexible, high-standard environment.
  • Advanced Placement (AP) Pathways: Bringing a robust AP culture to the school, including AP Prep for Grades 9 and 10 to build early confidence, and the innovative AP Career Kickstart Programming, featuring specialized courses in Business Principles and Personal Finance, in addition to the Capstone Diploma Program, AP Courses and AP Exams.
  • State-of-the-Art Technological Education: Creating future-ready learning spaces with cutting-edge tech programming that prepares students for the evolving global economy.
  • Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS): A Certified Tier 1 & Tier 2 Trainer, she has spent years shifting educator perspectives on student behavior to ensure inclusive classroom practices.

Rebecca’s leadership is supported by a deep foundation in Special Education, having served as both a System Vice Principal of Special Education and a Principal of a Grade 7-12 school.
