The Halton District School Board values and recognizes that volunteers enhance the learning experiences of our students and strengthen school and community partnerships. Volunteering is an opportunity to model and promote the value of developing positive relationships as caring and contributing citizens within our community.
Schools welcome parents, guardians and community members as volunteers who support the life of the school (such as field trips, breakfast programs, school council, safe arrival or careers day). Please contact the school for specific volunteer needs within the school.
All volunteers will have a Criminal Background Check which includes vulnerable sector screening. For further information refer to the
Halton Regional Police Service website. (Note: The Halton Regional Police Service now has an online process for residents who require a police record check).
If there is a Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening on file at the school, the volunteer is required to complete the Halton District School Board's Annual Offence Declaration for subsequent years.
The Education Act empowers boards to collect personal information under section 315, subsections 1, 2 and 3. Thus the requirement of a Police Record Check may be authorized by a board “to ensure the safety of pupils". Personal information is defined in s. 315(3) as having “the same meaning as in s. 38 of Freedom of Information and protection of Privacy Act and s. 28 of the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act".
