Social Sciences Department
The social sciences and humanities discipline in the Ontario secondary school curriculum includes equity studies, family studies, general social sciences, philosophy and world religions, all of which examine how individuals and groups interact with and are shaped by societal structures, values and ideas. While social sciences focus on human behavior, needs and societal trends, the humanities delve into fundamental questions about human nature and existence. These courses equip students with analytical tools, social theories and research skills to better understand themselves and the world around them.
Emphasizing critical thinking and systematic inquiry, the program encourages students to explore complex open-ended questions, fostering awareness and decision-making abilities in an increasingly diverse society. It also supports personal and academic growth, providing transferable skills applicable to postsecondary education, the workplace and various careers in fields such as social work, education, health sciences and business. Furthermore, the knowledge gained in these courses enriches students' understanding of other disciplines, promoting interdisciplinary thinking and engaged citizenship.
