Music
Our Celestial Choirs
We have some amazing "out of this world" vocal clubs at DDW. These groups focus on discovering the joy of singing and finding our "performance voices" in a fun, safe environment. Rehearsals are during our nutrition breaks throughout the school year. Rehearsal times are given on the weekly announcements.
- Grade 1 Moonbeam Choir
- Grade 2 Sunbeam Choir
- Grade 3 Cosmic Choir
- Grade 4-6 Galaxy Choir
Instrumental Ensembles:
In addition to our choirs, we are excited to offer instrumental groups during nutrition breaks:
- Grade 5 Recorder Club - for students in grade 5 who have been playing for over a year and want to learn some fun Pop/Disney music to learn on their instrument
- Grade 6-7 Bell Choir - a club for students interested in learning how to play the handbells. This club usually presents at our Winter Concert.
Music at DDW
Our Music program at Dr. David R. Williams School provides students in Grades 6–8 with a well-rounded and sequential experience in performing, creating, and understanding music. Students engage in a variety of musical activities, including instrumental performance, composition, listening, and reflection, while building confidence and collaboration skills.
Grade 6 Music
In Grade 6, students build on their foundational knowledge of the Elements of Music through hands-on musical experiences. Students are introduced to bucket/hand drum and ukulele technique to develop core skills in reading, rhythm, and performance. They are then introduced to a chosen Concert Band instrument (woodwind, brass, and percussion).
Students explore:
- Bucket drumming and hand drumming
- Basic rhythmic and melodic composition
- Introduction to music genres and listening skills
This year focuses on building confidence, establishing strong musical habits, and preparing students for more advanced instrumental work in later grades.
Grade 7 Music
In Grade 7, students deepen their understanding of musical concepts through continued performance, listening, and creative work. Students refine their instrumental skills and begin applying their knowledge more independently.
Students will:
- Continue developing Concert Band instrument technique and performance skills
- Explore the Elements of Music through analysis and class discussion
- Participate in composition activities (rhythm and melody)
Students are encouraged to join the DDW Concert Band, where they rehearse regularly and perform alongside more experienced musicians.
Grade 8 Music
In Grade 8, students consolidate their musical skills and apply them in more complex and creative ways. There is a strong focus on independence, expression, and musical understanding.
Students will:
- Refine their instrumental performance skills through more advanced repertoire
- Engage in music analysis, exploring how music connects to culture and society
- Create original compositions using written and digital composition tools
DDW Concert Band
A highlight of the program is the DDW Concert Band, open to interested students in Grades 6–8. The band rehearses twice weekly, often before school, and performs regularly at school concerts and assemblies.
Each year, the band represents DDW at the Wonderland Festival of Music, providing students with an exciting opportunity to perform in a professional setting.
Music at DDW is an opportunity for students to develop skills, express creativity, and be part of a collaborative musical community.
