Weekly Update

School Year

August 22

Hello DCB Families!

We hope you are all enjoying a safe and restful summer break. Mr Phillips and Mr Guintolon have been busy getting the school clean and organized, ready for staff to return over the next few weeks. We thank them for their hard work - the school looks incredible! Not only are things coming together inside, our front garden looks spectacular thanks to Ms Osborne. Now we are realizing just how much we are missing the students and we look forward to seeing everyone together on the first day of school, Tuesday Sept. 8th.

Meet the Principals:

Mr Thomson and Ms Henders would like to invite any families who are new to DCB or might be feeling uneasy about returning to school for a “Meet the Principal” visit on Wednesday August 26 at 6:00pm. If you think this would be beneficial for your family, we will meet you by the front door of the school. Any families who are unable to attend but would like to discuss this transition further are welcome to reach out to Ms Henders via email below.

Yours in Partnership,

Paul Thomson, Retiring Principal thomsonp@hdsb.ca

Kristy Henders, Incoming Principal  hendersk@hdsb.ca

June 20

I have spent the last 6 years sending out a weekly communication as the Principal of DCB.   while preparing this communication, I spent a bit of time reviewing some of the earliest messages that I sent during COVID where we went from virtual to hybrid to socially distant to finally in person fully.  My goodness, we have had a great ride!  Over the years there has been tremendous focus on the amazing  actions and future potential our students, your children, bring to school every day.  I have enjoyed every moment of the work I have been involved in while I lead the pursuit of excellence of opportunities for every student at DCB.  I have no doubt that this pursuit will remain the focus of DCB as Ms. Henders takes over in September after my retirement.  Thank you for the role you have all played in making my time at DCB so rewarding.

I also want to recognize Ms. Day who is retiring this year as well.  Ms. Day has been one of the rocks whom I have counted on to move learning forward with students.  Her ever present calm demeanor, warm smile, thoughtful comments and positive outlook have impacted hundreds of students over her career.   She is a strong advocate for students and has always given them 100% of her energy, time and expertise as she supports their continued development.  DCB is lucky to have been influenced by your commitment to education Ms. Day!

As the Green room families are aware, Ms. Mooers has stepped into a leadership role with her DECE Union group.  She will remain in that role for the duration of the 2026-27 school year and possibly beyond.  We wish her all of the best!

We will also be saying ‘until next time’  to a number of occasional educators.  Ms. Kenalty, Ms. Jansons, Ms. Howes and Ms. Hollands have filled in as Longterm Occasional Educators for large portions of the year.  We are very fortunate to have access to such dedicated professionals who have stepped in to take over various roles while permanent educators are on a leave.  Thank you all for the work you do every day to make connections for so many students.

Summer Reading Club

Who Can Borrow?

Any students in JK and up who will be returning to the school in September who express an interest in borrowing library books for the summer should be allowed to do so.

For more information please refer to this document.

For students to participate in the HDSB Summer Reading Program they will need to return ALL library books currently on loan.

Summer Checkouts will be June 16 & 23

Students should be sure to have an extra bag to carry home the books.

Last week the FDK students went to the African Lion Safari. The day was full of excitement and adventure and lots of new learning.  A portion of this trip was subsidized by the proceeds raised by the Coffee fundraiser many of you participated in making it less expensive/more accessible for our students.

Additionally, the grade 5 Celebration trip happened last week as students went to SUSO roller rink in Mapleview Mall.  This trip was subsidized by the DCB School Council, a practice that has happened every year since I have been here.  The students came back very excited about their day!

Thank you to the number of families and Community members who came out to join our Pride spirit walk yesterday.  The day focussed on our commitment to belongingness for everyone as we continue to develop a safe and inclusive school for all.

We have a number of celebrations coming up this week. Please remember to book through School Messenger for any absences.

Tuesday

  • Report Cards/ Communication of Learning go home

  • 1:35- Doors open for the Grade 5 Celebration Assembly.  Families are welcome to join us

Wednesday

Please look forward to communication from Ms. Henders during the week of August 17!

June 13

As we wind down the final weeks of the school year, it is a bitter sweet feeling knowing this will be my final ‘end of year’ process.  The students were excited to see Ms. Henders when she visited this week.  I believe that we have developped a very comprehensive transition plan to support students, parents and staff.

The School Council Fun Fair was very well attended on Tuesday and it was wonderful to see our community doing what it does best- meet, greet and support each other.  Then on Friday, our Donuts For Growups event brought the community back together again for our largest turn out yet.  Thank you to all who helped plan, set up and attend these events.  We appreciate all you do.

Next week we have several students going to Nelson High School for our Regional Track and Field Meet.  For those who want to come as spectators, the organizers are planning on beginning the Meet as soon as the last buses arrive.  The plan is to begin promptly at 10:00.

On Tuesday Night, students who are in the Musical Theatre Club are presenting their work from 7-8 PM in the DCB Gym.  There are no reservations required and all are welcome to support this group.

On Wednesday, the Kindergarten classes are off to the Lion Safari and the Grade 5s are off to the Roller Rink for their end of year celebration.

This will lead us into the final week of the year with report cards going home on the 23rd.  The Grade 5 celebration will also take place on the 23rd.  Families of grade 5 students are welcome to join us at 1:30 for a 1:45 start to our celebration in the gym.

On the 24th, the SK students ‘Hop The Fence” at 2:00.  Families are welcome to join us in the DCB gym at 1:45 for a 2:00 start for this celebration.

June 26th is our last day of school with an early dismissal at 1:45.  Bus schedules are adjusted to arrive 90 minutes early as well.

DCB Has Spirit!

Friday June 19 is going to be a Spirit Day Community Walk focussing on Belonging in support of the work we have been doing over the past number of years to pursue our shared goal of having DCB truly be a safe, welcoming, calm, caring and creative school for everyone.  In support of this goal, the DCB Equity Team set aside June 19th as our 5th Annual Rainbow Pride Parade Day! Each class in the school has been assigned a colour of the rainbow to wear for our parade. We will parade through our neighbourhood as usual and end our parade under our Pride Flag. Once there we will arrange the students under the flag in the shape of a rainbow and have a school photo taken.  Families are always welcome to join in our spirit walk by lining the route which will be along Parkgate, Majestic and return to the school along Parkgate.  We plan on meeting on the blacktop at 9:15 AM to begin our parade.

Classrooms colours are as follows:

Metcalf-Red

Vickers-Red or Orange

Kukalis-Orange

Ruzic-Orange or Yellow

Jansons-Yellow

Osborne-Yellow or Green

Woods-Green

Pryde/ Howes-Green or Blue

Day/Kenalty-Blue or Purple

Southworth/ Preston-Purple

Please feel free to dress in the colour of your class, or in all colours of the rainbow!

Thank you DCB! I can't wait to shine in the colours of the rainbow to show our love, acceptance and PRIDE for belonging to the Best School in Halton!!

June 6

It is unbelievable that there are only 3 weeks of school left for the year!  We will certainly make the most of our time together.

Congratulations to our Grade 3 students who wrote their EQAO Assessment last week.  For those who were wondering what that cracking sound was on Thursday around noon, it was the sound of these amazing students knocking it out of the park!  We are so proud of their accomplishments.

Ms. Henders, the incoming Principal of DCB beginning September, will be visiting DCB on Tuesday afternoon!  She is so excited to see the school, experience the culture and get to meet Staff and Students!

We got a call last week from the Music Monday Coalition For Music Education to announce that we won $1 000 for our Music Program after submitting our version of Hold On!  Thanks again to Ms. Jansz for organizing this opportunity.

School Council’s Family Picnic!

Please join us on Tuesday from 5-7 PM for our Annual Fun Fair/School Picnic.  Many families pre-ordered pizza while others will bring something on their own to enjoy ‘picnic style’ on the field while getting to know each other.  There are several activities and opportunities to try something new.  Try your hand at Cricket, take a turn on our Driving Range, learn some new soccer skills, enjoy speed Chess, or engage in various crafting opportunities!  Don’t forget your blankets and lawn chairs and be ready to have a blast!

Summer Reading Program

Any students in JK and up who will be returning to DCB in September will be allowed to take up to 10 books out for the summer months.

Permission Slips are required and will be available in the library for those interested.  In order to participate in the HDSB Summer Reading Program students will need to have returned ALL library books currently on loan.

Summer Checkouts will be June 16 & 23.

Students should be sure to have an extra bag to carry home the books.

Equity and Inclusion Corner

June is Pride Month!  Pride Month is a time to recognize and celebrate the diversity of the LGBTQ+ community, including the many different kinds of families that make up our school and neighbourhoods. It’s a reminder that love, dignity, and equal rights belong to everyone—regardless of gender identity, expression, or who they love.

For queer and trans people, Pride is not only a celebration but also a reflection on the ongoing fight for safety, visibility, and human rights. When we honour Pride in our school communities, we help create a space where all families feel seen and respected, and where every person—no matter their identity—can thrive.

May 30

I want to share that I will not be returning to DCB as the Principal in September as I am retiring.  Although I am absolutely certain of my decision, I want you to know that it was not one that was made easily.  Some of you may know that I could have retired years ago but still absolutely love what I do and especially love this school.  We have an incredible thing going on here and I will miss being involved in it as it continues to grow.  Thank you all for the roles you have played in making this such an amazing space to come to work at everyday for the past six years.

There will be an announcement made by the Board this week naming the next Principal of DCB.  I will share that information with you next week.  Please know that I remain committed to facilitating the best possible transition of leadership for the students, families and staff at the Best School in Halton.

From Ms. Kinghorn

ALL books should be returned to the library by June 12/26.

This allows time for the library to be prepped for inventory and for students to return all books before the Summer Reading Program begins.

Summer Reading checkouts will be June 16 and June 23.

I will send out more info regarding Summer Reading closer to the date, but in order for students to participate in the Summer Reading Program they must have all of their books returned and signed permission forms.

May 23

I will remember last week’s Arts and Culture Night as a definite highlight of my career.  The school was quite busy with so many activities and opportunities.  I particularly loved how the evening promoted students visiting classes outside of their homeroom to check out the goings on in another class.  Thanks go out particularly to Ms. Jansz for her vision and the DCB staff and students for making it come together.  Thank you for all of the comments that have been shared in support of the evening.

This event followed the Kindergarten orientation on Tuesday night where almost every new FDK student and their adults came out to learn about FDK and the DCB community.  Thanks to the DCB Staff for orchestrating this event and the School Council for their representation as well as operating the Book Fair.

Then on Thursday, our DCB Chess Team walked to P.A. Fisher for our third annual Chess Tournament.  This was another event where DCB students showcased their character as well as their skill and strategy as Ambassadors and just like you would assume, they were awesome.  Thanks to Ms. Sabo for providing this opportunity.

This week, our grade 5 students will get a visit by the Staff at Sir Ernest Macmillan PS on Tuesday and then have a trip to SEM planned for Friday to begin their transition for next year.

Can you believe it??

The last day for book exchanges will be MAY 29 2026.  ALL books should be returned to the library by June 12/26.  This allows time for the library to be prepped for inventory and for students to return all books before the Summer Reading Program begins.

May 2

We call this time of the year MaJune as these two final months blend together and go by so quickly.  It is hard to believe that there are 8 weeks of school left in this year!  Let’s make the most out of every moment.

Mr. Flahat, our Superintendent came for his spring visit on Friday.  He was met by our Student of Excellence, Marcus as well as members of our Caucus and some grade 4 students who spoke about the No Mow Zone and Junior Integration!  We was amazed by the students’ ability to share their engagement and learning as well as the ties to the Board’s Multi Year Plan.

On Monday at 1:45 (**Please note timing change**), we will be recognizing the importance of music education by participating in Music Monday.  Ms. Jansz has put together an assembly that showcases some of the musical opportunities at DCB and will culminate in the singing of Canadian Rockers Triumph’s song Hold On including special Community representation.

We plan on videotaping the singing of this song to submit it to the Coalition For Music Education for consideration to win $1,000 for our music program.  This request falls outside of the permission to photograph students that you received in September.  Submitted videos will be viewed by Rik Emmett, vocalist and guitar player for Triumph!

  • Please note that this recording will be used for promotional purposes outside of the HDSB by the Coalition.

  • Please note that a copy of the video will be sent to the Coalition after capturing the performance which will indicate a link to Dr. Charles Best PS in Burlington.

  • Other than the video and the link to DCB, no other identifying information will be shared.

  • The video will capture groups of students, not individuals and no names.

Please email DRCPS@hdsb.ca if you do not want your child included in the video by Monday at 12:00 PM.

  • Students in grades 3, 4, 5 are asked to bring their recorder to School on Monday as they will be showcased during the assembly.

  • All Students are welcome to wear Spirit Day colours (DCB wear or favourite colours)

Class Building Repost

We will begin building classes for next year in the next few weeks.  I want you to know that the DCB staff puts considerable thought into developing an understanding of students’ learning profiles.  We then spend time sharing student learning profiles with next year’s teachers when they are confirmed.  We are a small school but I want you to know that we are growing.  Final organizations and class placements will be shared on the Friday August 28, 2026.

Parents are welcome to send me an email for consideration when class building if they wish.  This email might reinforce a parent’s understanding of their child’s learning profile, social connections that are either desirable if possible as well as connections that might need a break.  These messages should only come to me at thomsonp@hdsb.ca and need to be received by May 15, 2026.

Upcoming Events- Repost

There are a number of events coming up that we would like you to consider putting in your calendar.  All of these events are also posted on the School Calendar found by scrolling to the bottom of our webpage’s main page (we are working to make this more accessible)

April 25

What a Week!  I marvel at all of the activity going on in and around our school and feel so fortunate to be part of it all. A couple of highlights for me were the activities in support of Earth Day (including our whole school outdoor picnic) as well as the Rock Band from SEM performance on Thursday.  This was in addition to all of the other goings on like crochet club, art club, digging club, batting practice, junior basketball, relay practice, soccer, manhunt, musical theatre, choir and chess club.  A huge thank you to the staff for providing such a menu of activities for the students.

April 18

Last week was full of nature’s surprises with the temperature, sun, wind and rain.  Please remember that we get outside often and students will be most comfortable if they are dressed for the everchanging conditions.  Please consider having a pair of shoes that are left at school as indoor shoes that can be changed into once students re-enter after being outside.  Families often consider packing a spare pair of pants and shorts to wear in the event a student falls on the wet grass or gets muddy in the sandpit.

As you may be aware, we have a very active fox den along our fence line.  The fox did make an appearance during our morning nutrition break on Friday.  I want you to know that staff patrol the yard with a keen eye looking out for the fox.  As your child may have shared, we have whistles that we blow loudly to redirect the fox away from the playground.  Rest assured that in the event that the fox does not move off the field when students are coming out, we will relocate students to another place around or in the school.  I have already shared my observations and concerns with the City of Burlington.

Look for DCB out and about on Wednesday at different points during the day in recognition of Earth Day.  Please consider sending your child to school with gloves suitable for Community Cleanup activities- a limited number of gloves wil be available at the school.

On Thursday, we will entertained by the Sir Ernest MacMillan Rock Band!  We are glad that they have included us on their current tour and look forward to hearing several former DCB students rock out during their performance.  Feel free to join us in the gym if you are available.  Doors open at 1:30- wristband policy is waived for this event!!

This is a four day week for students.  Staff will be involved in Cyber Security and Generative AI training on Friday.

I want to thank your children for another busy but amazing week at DCB.  I also want to thank the staff for their responsiveness to student suggestions and concerns.  It all rolls into our quest for a school where everyone feels included, safe, and proud to belong to.

I sent a message out last week regarding our Lockdown drill.  These drills are a part of our Emergency Preparedness Planning along with Fire Drills, Suspicious Package/Evacuation Drills and Hold and Secure Drills.  Students responded extremely well to the drill last week.

March 28

We had another week full of excitement, activities and learning!  Recorder Karate has taken off for our older grades and the Ukeleles are being heard around the school.  Musical Theatre, Choir, Art Club, Comic Club, Digging/Sandbox Club, are just a few of the weekly activities going on.  Several students have signed up for Chess Club which will begin next week.  We also took delivery of some new soccer nets with the support of the School Council that give us three full sized soccer pitches as well as a set of nets for our Kindergarten students to use at breaks.  Thanks to Aria, Abby, Phoenix and Hudson from Ms. Pryde’s class for assembling the new nets.  I appreciate your leadership!

In addition, several students engage in batting practice at breaks using a tball stand, soft bat and tennis balls.  Please note that students are only using school supplied balls and bats for nutrition breaks for safety.  Students are able to bring in their own baseball gloves (please label the glove with your child’s name).  Additionally, we have basketballs, volleyballs and soccer balls going out at recess breaks.  Students are allowed to bring their own balls (well labelled) if they wish.

On Thursday, DCB was represented by 2 teams at the Halton Skills Competition.  Although we are still awaiting our final score and standing, it was made clear to me by the Officials that our teams both represented themselves, their families and the DCB community to the highest degree.  Congratulations!  It was a pleasure to clap this team back in yesterday morning to Mr. Roboto!

Yesterday was also a day of support for the Toronto Blue Jays.  Our day began with a rousing rendition of “Okay Blue Jays” in the halls.  Perhaps you got to hear about it at home as well!  Let’s Go Jays!!

School Council Update

The DCB School Council will meet on April 1 at 7:00 in the Art Hall.  We are putting final plans together for the Spring Fun Fair. All are welcome to join either in person or virtually through this link.

March 21

I hope you have had a wonderful March Break and had a chance to enjoy time as a family.  We look forward to reconnecting with students on Monday as we jump right back into learning, laughing and belonging together.

Our newly updated Website has a new link for the Saturday Synopsis.  Please follow this link to access the weekly Synopsis.

On March 26, DCB will be sending 2 teams to the Halton Skills Competition at the New Street Education Centre!  Good luck to both of our teams!!

Blue Jays Spirit Day – Friday, March 27

To celebrate the start of a new baseball season and the Toronto Blue Jays Home Opener, our school will be hosting a Blue Jays Spirit Day on Friday, March 27!  Students are encouraged to show their team spirit by wearing Blue Jays fan gear, blue clothing, or their own baseball attire. Let’s fill the school with blue and celebrate another exciting season of baseball together!

Go Jays Go!

March 7

I hope that you have spent a bit of time outside today enjoying some of the sunny breaks between the showers.  We expect some more of the same this week at school which will likely have us off the field as it thaws and dries up.  When possible, we will continue to go outside at breaks so please ensure students come dressed for the weather.

Last week was our final session of the Crash Rhythm workshops.  During the week there was a blend of drumming and recorder practicing going on as well at the Music Battle of the Decades.  Don't be surprised if your child requests some additions to the family playlists at home!

Students in Ms. Pryde’s class created an initiative in support of our pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals at DCB.  Yesterday and every Friday in March at 2:00, our school goes ‘lights out’ for 20 minutes where it is safe to do so.

A few staff might have needed some Voltaren this morning after answering the challenge to play against the Boys’ Volleyball team.  It was a lot of fun for all and a great way to bring us together.  The Girls’ team has challenged the Staff this week- time to stretch Teachers.  The Girls are definitely going to bring it!!

This week will also provide us with some time to view Canada’s Paralympic teams as they demonstrate the pursuit of excellence in athletes- no matter what.  We wish our teams all the best.  To recognize their commitments, we will have a Spirit Day on Friday.  Students might want to wear Canada gear or colours, their own team jerseys, DCB wear or come dressed in their favourite colours.  Go Canada!!

                                                            Dr. Charles Best Weekly Synopsis

Hello BEST Families!

I hope everyone enjoyed their long weekend and the beautiful fall weather. Now that the temperature has shifted please remember that a large portion of the school day is spent outdoors so students are asked to dress appropriately for the weather conditions to ensure they are comfortable.

Upcoming School Parade Details: We will be having our annual school community parade on October 30th after morning entry. Students are invited to come to school wearing a costume, black and orange clothing, or clothing of their favourite colour if they would like. Please remember, if your student chooses to dress in a costume, it must support the positive and welcoming environment we strive for at DCB.

Costume Guidelines for School:

● Costumes should be fun and respectful.

● Costumes that mimic the traditional attire of an ethnic, religious, racial or gender group/identity are not appropriate.

● Costumes that are overly frightening or intended to incite fear are not appropriate.

● Replica weapons and masks should not be brought to school.

Once attendance is taken in homeroom classrooms, we will have classes come together for a parade inside the school which will then exit the building through the Art Hallway doors, travelling along the school (gym) wall, and re-entering through the junior doors. Families are invited to stand along the fence and the grassy perimeter of the blacktop to enjoy our parade. We will likely be outside around 9:10-9:15am. Should it rain that morning we may need to move families into the gym but those details will be determined at the time of the event. For safety reasons during the excitement, families are asked not to enter other areas in the school (washroom, hallways, or classrooms).

The following information is shared on behalf of the City of Burlington, which oversees

the administration of municipal elections in Burlington. “Burlington’s municipal election is

taking place between Oct. 14 and 26. Make a plan to vote at myvoteburlington.ca. Have

your say by voting for the Mayor, Regional and Local Councillors and School Board

Trustees.”

                                                            Dr. Charles Best Weekly Synopsis

Hello BEST Families!

Fall has officially arrived as we flipped the calendar over to October this week. Please remember that dressing students in layers is incredibly helpful to ensure they are warm on those cooler mornings yet comfortable in the warmth of the afternoons.

A huge shout out to Shayla and Vera who lead our schoolwide learning on Truth and Reconciliation on Wednesday through their read aloud and art hall display. Anura’s leadership with the Terry Fox fundraiser has also been very much appreciated. Student leadership is a vital part of DCB and we look forward to future events led by other student leaders this year.

On Tuesday morning the Fire Department will be visiting DCB to facilitate our second Fire Drill of the Fall with us. We are mandated to hold 3 fire drills and one additional emergency procedure drill each fall. If you notice the fire trucks in front of the school on Tuesday, there is nothing to worry about. Feel free to share this message with your students as well so they aren’t surprised.

With Halloween approaching, we’d like to provide a few reminders to help make the day safe and enjoyable for everyone on Friday October 30th. Students are invited to wear a costume or black and orange clothing if they would like. There is no expectation for your child to dress in either of these options. If your child chooses to dress in a costume, please help ensure their costume supports the positive and welcoming environment we strive for at our school.

Thank you for your co-operation

Now that our routines have been established we would like to ask families and friends to do their best to stand on the perimeter of the blacktop during entry and dismissal please. Once students have been dropped off at their lines or in the kindie area please step back to reduce crowd congestion. This helps our supervisors to keep track of our students and tend to their needs quickly. We appreciate your help with this.

Thank you to those families who have already completed and submitted the online September Start Up forms that went out on September 8th  and the online Verification Forms that went out on September 21st. These are essential in ensuring we have all the necessary updates/information on file each year. If you have not had a chance to complete them yet, please do so as soon as you are able.

School Council - We need your support! Last year our DCB community benefited from the hard work of our school council members. Without them the various fundraisers, Silent Auction Baskets, and Fun Family Picnic (just to name a few) would not have been possible. These initiatives take the support of many people to plan and deliver, and even small contributions go a long way in making the school experience better for our children.

To date, we only have a handful of people who have volunteered to donate their time to the 2026-2027 school council. We need more!

Please consider nominating yourself to be a voting member of the School Council for this year by completing this School Council Self Nomination Form. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, September 30th at 4:00 p.m. Help us in making a difference in the lives of our Dr. Charles Best students.

                                                            Dr. Charles Best Weekly Synopsis

Hello BEST Families!

Students have been busy creating some amazing work this week that they look forward to sharing during our Open House on Wednesday. We can’t wait for you to feel the excitement and pride that students share with us each day. Our Terry Fox donations have already begun to come in as we aim to beat our current record of just over $5000 raised last year. Please remember to visit the Terry Fox Foundation website (instructions shared in a previous email from the school) to make a donation if you would like to support this cause. We are incredibly excited to host Junglesport next week and extend a huge thank you to our School Council for prioritizing this event for DCB students. Families are reminded that students will need appropriate running shoes and comfortable clothing, as well as their physical education consent forms from the September forms package, in order to participate in the excitement.

We would like to introduce our school’s Child and Youth Care Practitioner (CYC-P): Amanda Mascola, and our School’s Social Worker (SW): Jenny White.

Amanda and Jenny will be a part of the Dr. Charles Best community this year.

What is a CYC-P? CYC-Ps are an active and integral part of the school community, often participating in school-wide activities (e.g. well-being teams, youth engagement, parent/guardian/caregiver information sessions, etc.) with educators to enhance student well-being. Students receive mental health literacy and social-emotional learning while at school through the curriculum. As a complement to this learning, CYC-Ps promote mental health through sharing and co-leading  evidence-based social-emotional learning and activities to provide classwide programming. CYC-Ps are also part of response teams for all schools in the Halton District School Board (e.g. Traumatic Events Response Team, and suicide risk screening).

How CYC-Ps can support students

Parents/guardians/caregivers may receive notification letters and updates throughout the school year about evidence-based social-emotional literacy materials shared in classrooms with CYC-Ps. CYC-Ps can also provide specific opportunities for students through small group or individual sessions focusing on psychoeducation, well-being and skill building. These sessions support students in reaching their goals. This is done in consultation with and consent from parents/guardians/caregivers.

What is a Social Worker? Social Workers are an integral part of the school community.  Social Workers work together with students,  parents/caregivers, staff and community providers to help students feel well and have a positive school experience. Students learn ways to address their feelings and emotions through identity-affirming evidenced-based therapeutic interventions. Social Workers, like CYC-Ps, are also part of response teams for all schools in the HDSB. Access to a Social Worker is done through your child’s school with parent/guardian consent through the SRT process. Grade 7 and 8 students (who are 12 years of age or older) may provide independent consent to receive individual psychotherapeutic support

How can Social Workers support students? Social Workers use psychotherapeutic interventions to support students on a variety of issues. These interventions are evidence-based and are identity-affirming to ensure that students feel that their voice is being heard and validated. Some interventions used include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy. Social Workers and students work towards goal based outcomes.

Further information and additional support about the full complement of services from Student Well-Being

                                                            Dr. Charles Best Weekly Synopsis

Hello BEST Families!

It has been an exciting first week of school and my absolute favourite part has been the warm welcome and positive energy. Our newest friends have been welcomed with open hearts and the halls have been full of chatter and laughter as everyone reconnected and reestablished our routines. I have come to work every day thankful to be part of this incredible community.

In my conversations with some students this week they have requested additional board games/puzzles to use in classrooms during rainy indoor recesses. If you have any that your family is no longer using we would gladly accept donations. Please make sure all pieces are included before sending them to the office. Thanks in advance from our students.

Attention Bus Students - Halton Student Transportation Services: If transportation is assigned to your child(ren), and your child(ren) does not require transportation for this school year, please complete the Opt Out form.  Transportation can be reinstated through the school year, by contacting your child(ren)’s school administration. This is incredibly helpful to ensure our staff know who is on the bus and who is not. Thank you for your support with this.

Looking For Student Supervisors: As we plan for our student supervision needs, we are currently hiring additional part time (1 hr/day, 5 days a week) and supply (occasional coverage as needed) Student Supervisors. Our DCB Student Supervisors are responsible for supervising our students both inside and outside during our scheduled break times. This is a PAID position through the Board for the duration of the school year. This position requires an updated Police Check that includes a vulnerable sector screening. If you are interested in joining our Student Supervisor Team at Best, please email Ms. Henders (hendersk@hdsb.ca).

DCB Coaching Staff Message - Last year we had a wonderfully successful sports season with boys and girls volleyball and boys basketball. We entered two tournaments and the kids all had such a great time! This year, we hope to continue our athletic endeavors by entering a boys and girls team in both basketball and volleyball tournaments. Due to the number of participants coming out to play last year, and the number of players per team projected through the Board for these sports particularly, we will be forced to hold tryouts for grade 4 and 5 students interested in joining these teams. Please speak to your child about understanding that this means that not everyone who tries out will make the team. The coaching staff gives significant consideration when choosing the teams. We look not only for skill, but for consistency in attending practices and overall sportsmanship. Please know there are many opportunities to get involved in teams and clubs throughout the school year, and other teams such as Cross Country do not limit the number of participants we can take. In order to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in athletics this year so we will be having intramurals in the spring for volleyball and basketball that anyone is welcome to attend. Thank you so much and we are looking forward to this year!

Punctuality and Attendance: This week, routines have started to be established, including earlier bedtimes and wake up times.  Students do better in school when they arrive on time and attend on a daily basis.  Even when they are late by 15 minutes, they have missed critical news on the announcements and many team building activities. In grades 1-5 essential literacy and numeracy is often taught first thing in the morning.  In the event that an absence or late arrival is unavoidable please bring students to the office where they will be signed in. Absences or late arrivals need to be reported to School Messenger so the school is aware. Please use either the HDSB mobile App, available for download from the App Store and Google Play, Website go.schoolmessenger.ca or Phone 1-877-409-6310 (toll free). Please call the office if you need help learning how to do this.

                                                            Dr. Charles Best Weekly Synopsis

Hello BEST Families!

There are only a few short days remaining between now and our first day of school and we are so excited to see you all. Staff have been engaged in professional development over the past couple days focussing on safe schools procedures and centering the whole child through Literacy, Numeracy, and Assessment practices. The excitement and attendance during the Kindergarten meet and greet yesterday was incredible, as well as the various transition visits that have taken place over the past few days. We are all set to reopen our doors on Tuesday morning!

Families are reminded that again this school year the parking lot should not be used for morning drop offs or after school pick ups due to student safety concerns and staff parking requirements. During these times of high pedestrian traffic please plan to park on Michael or Parkgate or other nearby streets and walk to the school. Be sure to adhere to the posted street signage to avoid parking fines.

Grade 1 - 5 class placement emails were scheduled to be sent out at 4pm today. Given that this is a Boardwide practice it may result in a system delay in the time they are received so please be patient.

First Day of School Routine - Tuesday Sept 8th 8:40-8:55am

All students Grades 1-5 will proceed to the blacktop.  If your child takes the bus on day 1 we will have staff waiting for them and we will walk them to their class lines. Homeroom Teachers will be holding up class signs and support staff will be wearing bright vests; everyone will be happy to help show students where to head.  If you are unsure of anything, please just ask. At the end of the day please make your way to the blacktop by 3:15pm and your student will be dismissed to the same location in which they entered. Ensuring your student, and ideally their teacher, are aware of after school routines will be incredibly helpful in ensuring everyone safely gets to where they need to. For the safety of our students, families are not to enter the school during this time.

All students in Kindergarten will proceed to the fenced area behind the school where you will find staff greeting and showing students where to head. If for some reason your child is sad or anxious about joining the class, please know that this is very normal and the staff at the door and inside the class are very qualified for this moment and will help them.  Crying or anxious feelings usually stop shortly after families leave, so please try to drop them off and head out of sight as quickly as possible. If the upset persists we will call you.  You can safely assume no news is great news. At the end of the day, please make your way to the same fenced area by 3:15pm and your student will be dismissed to you by their educators.  For the safety of our students again, families are not to enter the school during this time.

Important Dates:

Sept 21-25: Junglesport in the gym

Sept 24: Cross Country Meet for team members

Sept 30: National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

Dr. Charles Best Weekly Synopsis

Hello BEST Families!

Next week’s synopsis will include information about first day procedures to ensure everyone is set up for a smooth transition. Stay tuned!

Mr. Thomson and I had a wonderful time connecting with families during our Meet the Principal visit on Wednesday evening. Mr. Thomson has been a wonderful partner helping me learn about the amazing community and I want to congratulate him on the start of his official retirement Monday. That being said, Mr Thomson has agreed to return as a supply Principal during my absences so you can expect to see him around again soon!

Kindergarten Families: Class placements will be emailed to Kindergarten families on Tuesday, September 1st in advance of the Kindergarten Meet and Greet on Thursday, September 3rd @9:00am. While the Meet and Greet is primarily intended for JK families to come together to see the classrooms and meet our incredible Kindergarten educators, SK families are welcome to attend as well if interested. The most the merrier!

Class Placements Grade 1-5: Class placements will be emailed to Grade 1-5 families on Friday, September 4th around 4pm.  It is important to note that the class lists were made with your input last Spring, along with last year’s staff input. The staff has worked diligently to consider the best possible placement for students given the confines of hard class caps and in some circumstances, limited choice. Best friends do not always make positive learning peers and ultimately we need to ensure that classes are as balanced as possible. We recognize that for a small percentage of our students there may be an initial disappointment that they might not be placed with a specific teacher or friend of their choice. Experience however, has taught us that after the first few days of school, students settle in and adapt to their new environments nicely. We will not be accepting any requests for changes. Thank you for your understanding. We are so excited for the amazing opportunities that await us this year!

Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) - Help 400 HDSB Students Start School with Confidence: As students across our community head back to school, some will arrive without the basics they need: a backpack, school supplies, or even lunch. The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF), thanks to our generous community, is here to help.

HLF launched its Back-to-School campaign, with the help of our cheerful helper Carrie the Backpack, to help 400 HDSB students by September 30. Families are counting on this support, and HLF is asking our generous community to step in urgently so they can continue to say “YES” to every request for emergency support they receive.

Here's what one parent shared about what saying “YES” meant to her family:

Just wanted to say how grateful I am for this support. I’m a single mom, and because of your help, I’m able to get what my daughter needs for back-to-school and food, and I’m so unbelievably grateful for the support.

Make a gift for a student in need today: Donate Now

Together, we can give students not just supplies, but confidence, dignity, and hope.

Learn more about Carrie’s Back to School mission and how you can help at GoBack2School.ca.

Register for School Cash Online: ALL fees during the school year must be made available via School Cash Online. If you are new to School Cash Online please check out this link with helpful info about what you need to register your account. You will not be able to pay for hot lunches (Pizza Day will be posted soon), field trips, community events, etc. without this account. Please contact the main office if you need assistance setting this up.
