School Updates for September 18, 2026

The HDSB Parent Involvement Committee (PIC): invites parents/guardians and community members to attend the upcoming Parent Involvement Committee Conference on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Elsie MacGill Secondary School in Milton.

The theme for this year’s event is Get Connected. Parents/guardians are invited to explore practical workshops on Student Mental Health and Well Being, Special Education, Generative AI and Social Media, Literacy, Mathematics, School Pathways, Equity and Inclusion. Come learn, connect and discover ways to support student success. Registration is now open for this free event, including childcare, a light lunch and transportation within Halton Region.

The Halton District School Board (HDSB): is excited to announce a brand-new regional sports program launching in September 2027, the Academy for Athletic Performance and Excellence (APEX). The program will be housed at the HDSB’s new Oakville Secondary School, located at 4020 Sixth Line in Oakville. APEX is open to all eligible secondary students across Ontario. 

Opportunity for Grade 7 and 8 Students Scholars’ Hub is a free, in-person academic support initiative led by experienced Halton District School Board (HDSB) educators. Scholars’ Hub provides targeted academic support in a supportive, engaging learning environment.  Learn more about the program.

HDSB Secondary School Open House: On Saturday, September 26, 2026, the Halton District School Board will host a board-wide, interactive Open House at Craig Kielburger Secondary School in Milton from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.

This event is designed to help students in Grades 6–10 and their families explore the full range of opportunities available across our secondary schools, including programs and pathways, academics, athletics, clubs, community and support and student life.

School Updates for September 11, 2026

It was an exciting first week back at Hawthorne! Our Grades 1–8 assembly was a great success, giving us a chance to introduce exciting changes to our playground and timetables. Students did a wonderful job transitioning back into their daily routines and catching up with friends.

Thank you to all of our families for your patience during drop-off on the first day as we worked through the initial morning rush. 

Parking lot: Our parking lot is closed so please remember that if you plan on driving to school you will need to park in the community while following the rules of the road. Please do not enter the front bus loop or drop off in the side loop as it is always closed to cars for drop off. 

Neighbourhood parking: We have been fielding many phone calls from community members that Hawthorne parents are blocking driveways so neighbours can not use their own driveways.  PLease give yourself lots of time to find appropriate parking.

Playground Safety: Please note that inversions (e.g., hanging upside down or performing a flip) cannot be completed during recess. We do not have the appropriate equipment or environment to safely support these activities at school. For safety reasons, students should not engage in inversions during recess or on school property. 

Questions about your child's education? Start by speaking with your child's teacher and principal. If you still need support, the HDSB’s Student and Family Support Office can help answer questions, provide information and connect you with the appropriate supports.

Plans of Care Reminders: A gentle reminder to please drop off any required medical supplies and paperwork at the main office if you haven't already. As a safety requirement, we must have a duplicate on hand for emergency items like inhalers and EpiPens. 

Help 400 HDSB Students Start School with Confidence

As students across our community head back to school, some will arrive without the basics they need: a backpack, school supplies, or even lunch. The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF), thanks to our generous community, is here to help.

HLF launched its Back-to-School campaign, with the help of its cheerful helper, Carrie the Backpack, to support 400 HDSB students by September 30. Families are counting on this support, and HLF is asking our generous community to step in urgently so they can continue to say “YES” to every request for emergency support they receive.

Here's what one parent shared about what saying “YES” meant to her family:

Just wanted to say how grateful I am for this support. I’m a single mom, and because of your help, I’m able to get what my daughter needs for back-to-school and food, and I’m so unbelievably grateful for the support.

School Updates for September 4, 2026

We have had an exciting two weeks preparing for the upcoming school year, and we can’t wait to welcome back all of our Hawthorne Huskies on Tuesday!

You should have received your child's class placement at 4:00pm. If you didn't receive it, please don't worry, we will have plenty of staff members outside on the playground Tuesday morning with up-to-date class lists to help guide your student.

We know this weekend brings a mix of excitement and first-day nerves, but rest assured, your child is going to have a fantastic start to the year. Enjoy the long weekend, and we'll see you on Tuesday!

• JK / Kindergarten: Door 16 (Enter via the North parking lot; JK drop-off is at 10:30 AM).

• Grades 5 & 6: Lower field.

• Grades 7 & 8: South side hardtop near Door 6.

• ARC Students: Lower field.

Cell Phones: At Hawthorne we practice “Bell to Bell, No Cell” which is in compliance with Ministry of Education Policies. During the school day, communication with home should be through the school (classroom phone with permission or from the office). All learning at school should be on school technology. Headphones are not permitted in the hallways (only in class when teachers have given permission). Smart Watches, GPS Watches and Camera Watches must stay in your bag or locker during the school day. We appreciate your ongoing support with this.

Mental Health & Well-Being Information Sessions for Parents/Guardians

The HDSB is hosting Mental Health & Well-Being Information Sessions for parents/guardians this Winter and Spring. Each session will be led by a mental health expert in that area who will share their knowledge and provide helpful information and resources.​​ The upcoming sessions include:

• Helping Your Child Build Positive Relationships and Manage Conflict | Jan. 22  

• Halton ADAPT (Alcohol, Drug and Gambling Assessment, Prevention & Treatment Services) - Exploring Our Services | Jan. 27

Out of Area Transfer Requests (2026-2027) - Elementary Schools

Students looking to attend a school other than their home school can do so by completing an Out of Area Transfer Request Application. Applications are being accepted from Jan. 5 - Feb. 27, 2026 and can be submitted to your home school.

Crafting for Kindness

We are absolutely thrilled to have launched our Crafting for Kindness club! This inspiring group meets twice a week, pairing our Grade 6 members with leadership from our Grade 8 students. For our first project, we are handcrafting beautiful felt scarves that we will be proudly donating to Halton Women's Place. Through this work, we are helping bring the Halton Board’s focus on Kindness, Connection, and Community to our school. 

Reminder We are a Nut Free School

Many students at Hawthorne Village have allergies to peanuts and other nut products. It is very important that families carefully check product labels when packing lunches and avoid sending any items that contain peanuts or nuts. This includes products such as Nutella, Wow Butter and peanut butter.  Hawthorne Village is a nut free school.
