It’s that time of year when we get an opportunity to start again, set goals, meet new people and experience new adventures! Heritage Glen welcomes a new cohort of JK students as well as a large number of students joining us across all the grades.

Dear Parents and Caregivers,
Welcome to what is already turning out to be a vibrant and energetic school year! Our teachers have spent these first few days creating warm, inclusive classroom environments, and it has been wonderful watching our students build new friendships, connect with their peers, and settle into their daily routines. To ensure this sense of stability and community continues to thrive, we will not be making any class placement changes at this time. Keeping our rosters consistent right now allows our educators to establish strong classroom dynamics and give every child the focused, uninterrupted space they need to feel secure.
We also want to reassure families in combined-grade (split) classes that extensive educational research—including meta-analyses by renowned researcher John Hattie—demonstrates that multi-grade classes have no negative impact on student achievement. What truly drives learning is quality teaching, strong peer relationships, and targeted instruction, all of which are central to how our dedicated staff operate every day. We continuously monitor how our students are settling in, and if adjustments are still needed down the road, we will begin considering class changes in late September once our full enrollment numbers and classroom structures are finalized.

Volunteering in the School
Please note that all volunteers in the school must have a current Police Record Check and a HDSB Annual Offence Declaration. Guidelines are outlined at the following link:
Start of Day
Supervision begins at 8:00am on the blacktop at the back of the school. Do not drop your
child off at school before supervision begins.
Students remain outside until 8:10, when bell #1 rings
At 8:10, all grades enter (free flow) through the back doors.
8:15 bell #2 rings and students should be in class for morning attendance.
All students should be dropped off in the morning at the blacktop at the back of the school.
Kindie students must enter from the Kindie Pen. Due to safety reasons, parents should not be
bringing their child to the front doors and leaving them in the office.
This adds an additional strain on our office staff during the busiest time of the day and
introduces constant interruptions in learning as students enter the classroom once the day is
underway.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in ensuring students are in class on time and
minimizing interruptions.
Students who are late in the morning will be required to line up in front of the office to have
their name recorded for attendance before heading to the classroom.
Nutrition Breaks
Students bring their own lunch and snacks each day. Students should also have their
own water bottle. There are two nutrition breaks (10:15 and 12:55).
Weather
Students go outside during Nutrition and Lunch Breaks. With the changes in weather, students
should have appropriate outdoor clothing, i.e. raincoats, boots, hat etc. We have a lot of
students coming inside from breaks with wet clothing, pants, socks etc.
In order to avoid calls home, please ensure your child has an extra set of clothes at
school to change into.

Students who will be late or absent should be reported on School Messenger.

Picking up a Student for an Appointment
If a student must leave school for an appointment, a parent/guardian may do this by
coming to the main doors, ringing the doorbell and speaking to a secretary. Students will
REMAIN in class until a parent/guardian has arrived. We are not able to have students
waiting in the office, so please understand that you may need to allocate extra
time for appointments. Please also note that it is not possible for office staff to locate
students for dismissal during outdoor recess. Due to the nature of end-of-the-day
routines, no students will be dismissed to leave early after 2:15 p.m.
Essential Material Drop-off
If your child has forgotten an essential item (e.g., forgotten lunch or medication), the
parent/guardian can ring the doorbell to let the office know there is an item being dropped
off on the table within the main entrance. Please ensure you have labelled the item with
the student’s first and last name, teacher and grade/class before you bring it to school.
Please note that we will do our best to get these items to students during the
next break.
