Harvest Oak's Breakfast Cart Program

Dear Caregivers,

Harvest Oak partners with Halton Food for Thought (HFFT) to run our Breakfast Cart Program. Last year, we were able to get our program running 3 days a week. This year, we are hoping to run 5 days a week, but need caregiver volunteers to make this happen.

HFFT is a not-for-profit organization that partners with over 150 schools across Halton to provide student nutrition programs. The Breakfast Cart program will provide many benefits to Harvest Oak PS students including increased access to healthy foods and snacks, and the necessary energy to fuel their day.

The Statistics
Currently, 3 in 10 Halton students are arriving at school without adequate breakfast, snack or lunch. What students eat has a profound impact on their ability to learn. Studies show that students with access to healthy food choices are more alert and perform better academically. Visit haltonfoodforthought.com for more information on the importance and benefits of student nutrition.

Breakfast Cart Program - Nutrition Guidelines
The Breakfast Cart Program will be available 3 days a week (Days TBD) during which Breakfast Carts will be filled with nutritious food including fresh fruit and/or vegetables, grains, hummus and yogurt, cheese and more. Food provided must follow provincial Nutrition Guidelines. All students will have access to the program between 8:35am and 8:50am.

Funding
The financial start up for this program will be provided by provincial grants made available through Halton Food for Thought. Additional support will be required from the school.

Caregiver support/volunteer
If you are interested in supporting the program financially (any amount is appreciated) donations can be made online via School Cash Online- Donations at any time throughout the year. If you would like to donate food, have a connection to a local business or would like to help volunteer in the program please contact our Program Coordinators: Phi Tran (staff coordinator at tranp@hdsb.ca) and Manar Ramadan (caregiver coordinator).

Regards,
