Weekly Community Messages - June 19th, 2026
We are almost there, Tuck families! This week was another great week here at JTT. The Grade 8 students spent 3 days in Ottawa for their graduation trip, and it was a great success. Our Junior students had their Track and Field Day, and both girls’ and boys’ teams placed FIRST overall. Congratulations to all the athletes. The weather held out for our outdoor concerts this week, and we were graced with wonderful performances by our Kindergarten through grade 3 students. Finally, three of our educators, Mrs. Britton, Mrs. Rechil, and Mrs. Puma, were recognized at the Board Meeting this week, having been nominated for an Inspire Award by some of their families. Congratulations!

"It's for you!" Reconnecting kids the old-school way: Unplugged Canada’s Operation Landline initiative
Remember the days when the phone would ring and someone would shout, "It’s for you!"? Those exciting moments of childhood independence are making a comeback at Burlington’s John T. Tuck Public School, where 43 families (and growing!) have joined a movement to reconnect kids with the joy of simple, screen-free phone calls.
The Tuck landline community began in February with 30 families purchasing the "Tin Can," a retro-inspired corded phone that connects via home internet routers.
Unplugged Canada has launched Operation Landline, a new national initiative to bring back the traditional landline, fostering neighbourhood connections while helping children build independence and social skills.
These calling-only phones let kids call approved friends or family on their own, free from the addictive algorithms and endless notifications of smartphones.
Parents are thrilled to hear their children engaging in meaningful conversations—asking thoughtful questions like “What did you have for dinner?” sharing stories, arranging playdates, and even ending conversations with politeness: “Have a good night. Talk again soon!”
Here’s how you can get involved:
-
Sign the Unplugged Canada Pledge at unpluggedcanada.com to delay smartphones and establish a new norm in our community.
-
Join the Operation Landline initiative: Explore modern landline alternatives like Fongo or the Tin Can phone, which are affordable and easy to set up via a home internet router.
-
To make it easier to connect, parents can create a WhatsApp group to share phone numbers as new families join. ○ (For Tuck newsletter only: Join the Tuck WhatsApp group here.)
-
Teach your kids about phone safety , such as keeping personal information private.
-
Make an old-school paper phonebook by organizing names alphabetically and swapping phone numbers with trusted friends and family.
