Repost: Update to Bell Times for 2026-2027 School Year

As we prepare for the 2026-2027 school year, I am sharing an important update regarding our daily schedule. Bell times at some Halton schools, including ours, are being adjusted to improve transportation efficiencies. These adjustments allow for better route sharing and cost efficiencies, ensuring that transportation resources continue to support growing communities and evolving programs.

Beginning September 2026, our school will be moving to the following bell times:

Duty Supervision Begins: 9:05 am

New Start Time: 9:20 am

New Dismissal: 3:40 pm

Duty Supervision Ends:  3:55 pm

I understand that changes in bell times can impact your family’s routines, including childcare arrangements and work schedules. We appreciate your flexibility as we transition to this new schedule for the coming year.

Upcoming Dates

-May 15 -- Popcorn Day

-May 18 -- Victoria Day (No School)

-May 21 -- Community Event (Spring Fling - 5:30-8:00)

Good Morning families of McKenzie-Smith Bennett PS,

WOW! We are having such a great Spring.  We had a blast at our Growth Mindset assembly in our brand new MSB Growth Mindset T-Shirts.  Did we ever look sharp.  Look for pictures of this event, and many others in our student yearbook. Yearbook ordering will be coming soon through school cash online.  Stay tuned.

A big thank you to all the students, and accompanying adult, who attended our annual art night.  We had 25 brave artists learn all about Van Gogh and recreate a piece of art in the style of Van Gogh. Huge thanks to Mr. Londos and Mrs. Neilson for leading us through this fun event.

A warm welcome goes out to all our new Junior Kindergarten friends who attended our Kindergarten Orientation.  A fun time was had by many of our tiniest friends.  Looking forward to welcoming you in September.

We are in the very early stages of planning for next school year.  We will be putting out a parent input form soon for your input.  Please stay tuned for that in the next few weeks.

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to Michelle Mendes - Vice Principal (mendesmi@hdsb.ca) or Jeff Chaisson - Principal (chaissonj@hdsb.ca).

Student of Excellence: Grade 6 Spotlight

We are thrilled to celebrate a remarkable achievement within our school community. Each year, the Halton District School Board (HDSB) recognizes students who demonstrate outstanding academic effort, leadership, and a commitment to their school environment.

This month, we are proud to announce our Grade 6 Student of Excellence, Coral Statema!

Being a "Student of Excellence" isn't just about getting the highest grades; it’s about character, curiosity, and contribution. Our recipient has consistently demonstrated the following HDSB pillars:

  • Inclusive Leadership: Ensuring every peer feels welcome in the classroom and on the playground.

  • Academic Perseverance: Taking on new challenges in Math and Literacy with a growth mindset.

  • Collaborative Spirit: Working effectively in groups and supporting classmates when they hit a roadblock.

Excellence is not a single act, but a habit. It’s the little things—holding a door, asking a great question, or trying again after a mistake—that build a great leader.

Please join the MSB staff in celebrating Coral. We are incredibly proud of the way she represents our school and the HDSB community.  Oh the places you will go!

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to Michelle Mendes - Vice Principal (mendesmi@hdsb.ca) or Jeff Chaisson - Principal (chaissonj@hdsb.ca).

Big News! New Growth Mindset Shirts for Every MSB Student

We have some incredibly exciting news to share! As part of our ongoing commitment to fostering resilience and a "can-do" attitude, we are proud to announce that every single student at MSB is receiving a brand-new Growth Mindset t-shirt!

These shirts aren't just a new addition to the wardrobe; they are a symbol of our students' hard work, their willingness to embrace challenges, and the understanding that their potential is limitless.

👕 When to Wear Them

Moving forward, we want to see a sea of MSB pride during our school spirit days. Specifically, we are asking all students to wear their new shirts during our Growth Mindset Assemblies.

🗓️ Our Next Assembly

Mark your calendars! Our very next assembly is this Thursday. We can't wait to see all our students standing tall and feeling proud in their new gear as we celebrate our collective progress and "yet" power.

A Quick Reminder:

  • What: New Growth Mindset Shirts

We are already looking forward to next year.  Thank you goes out to all those who purchased GLOW packages. All students were given glow sticks from their teachers as well.  The students were GLOWING and we had a great time.

We had a great Growth Mindset assembly yesterday where we honoured both students and staff who display courage.  Courage taking a risk, courage to tell someone why they are important, courage to challenge themselves to try something new, and many other courageous acts.  We are excited to honour our work in Growth Mindset with a surprise in the coming weeks.  Stay tuned.

Thank you to all those who have donated a Loonie or Toonie for our below fundraiser.  As we know, in April the Halton District School Board (HDSB) has a campaign to support the Halton Learning Foundation (HLF).  HLF helps support the many students and families in our school communities who need a little extra support during these difficult times. Good Afternoon families of McKenzie-Smith Bennett PS,

With the warmer weather we have many of our families walking to school.  This is awesome as we love to see our kids walk to school.  To maintain safety of all our students and their families we want to remind people of a few of our parking lot rules:

  1. Please remember to remain in your car if you are using the pull in Kiss N’ Ride area in the mornings.  The rationale is that cars will back into the road if parents/caregivers need to get out of their car and this poses a traffic issue.

  1. If you do need to get out of your car to help your child(ren) out of the car we ask that you park either in an empty space in the parking lot or on the road by the front of the school.

  1. If parking please refrain from parking in designated spots. These spots are used by families within our school and need to be available to them.

  1. Please remember to keep dogs well away from the walking path and the outdoor play areas in the morning. Our students love to gather around them and this can excite or scare dogs to bite.

Please note that it was erroneously stated that this Friday is a cookie day.  It is not.  It is a popcorn day for those who ordered popcorn.

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to Michelle Mendes - Vice Principal (mendesmi@hdsb.ca) or Jeff Chaisson - Principal (chaissonj@hdsb.ca).

Thank you goes out to all families and students who helped us show kindness yesterday on Pink Shirt Day.  We had a tremendous amount of students and staff take a stand against bullying and ensure everyone knows we are a school which values and honours kindness.  On this day, and everyday, we, at MSB, are proud to ensure that bullying won’t be accepted and that kindness is the path we choose.

We would like to congratulate our Grade 4/5 Boys Volleyball team on playing extremely well last Thursday. They battled hard every game and we are so proud of how they represented MSB.

Police Record Checks

As of December 2025, the Ontario Ministry of Education introduced amendments to Police Record Check requirements under Ontario Regulation 298/25, effective April 1, 2026. As a result, school boards are now required to obtain a new Police Record Check (PRC) for all school volunteers every five years. A new PRC will also be required if there has been a lapse in submitting the Annual Offence Declaration.

These updated requirements apply to both current and new volunteers and are part of ongoing efforts to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. We sincerely appreciate the time and care our volunteers bring to our school community. Your involvement makes a meaningful difference, and we look forward to welcoming both returning and new volunteers. Learn more about the updated PRC requirements for volunteers and how to get involved in our school community by visiting the Volunteer in HDSB Schools webpage on the HDSB website (hdsb.ca).

We congratulate our Grade Six girls volleyball team on their silver medal last week.  They defeated some really strong teams en route to a second place finish.  We are proud of you.  Tomorrow we cheer on the Grade Four/Five Boys team as we host our third volleyball tournament of the season.

Pink Shirt Day

Pink Shirt Day is Wednesday, February 25, 2026. This is a day when we encourage everyone to wear a pink shirt to symbolize taking a stand against bullying. This day originated in Nova Scotia when two high school students intervened after a grade nine boy was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. By wearing pink, we show that bullying is not acceptable at our school.

Good Afternoon families of McKenzie-Smith Bennett PS,

Happy February! As we move into the heart of the school year, our classrooms are turning their focus toward Black History Month.

While the Ontario curriculum integrates diverse voices year-round, February provides a special opportunity to lean in and celebrate the rich legacy, contributions, and "Black Excellence" of Black Canadians—past, present, and future.

This month is about more than just looking back; it’s about recognizing the joy, innovation, and leadership within the Black community. Our activities will focus on:

Local Heroes: Learning about Ontario trailblazers like Viola Desmond and Lincoln Alexander.

Innovation: Exploring Black excellence in STEM, the arts, and community leadership.

Future-Building: Empowering our students to see themselves as changemakers in their own communities.

Excellence is best celebrated together! Here are a few ways to keep the conversation going at home:

Read Together: Visit your local library to find books by Black Canadian authors.

Explore Ontario History: Discuss the significance of sites like the Uncle Tom’s Cabin Historic Site in Dresden or the Black Settlement Heritage Park.

Support Local: Check out Black-owned businesses or community events happening across the GTA/Ontario this month.

We are excited to share this month of learning and inspiration with your children. If you have any stories, resources, or local community connections you’d like to share with us, please don't hesitate to reach out!

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to Michelle Mendes - Vice Principal (mendesmi@hdsb.ca) or Jeff Chaisson - Principal (chaissonj@hdsb.ca).

Good Afternoon families of McKenzie-Smith Bennett PS,

We had a blast with Jungle Sport last week but now that they are gone we are back to focusing on intramurals at breaks and free play outside.  We do watch the weather and when it dips below -20 degrees Celsius, we ensure the students stay in.  We are sharing this information with you as we are aware that this week or next we may have a day which will fall below this temperature and require us to stay inside for the break or breaks.

Be reminded that Monday, January 26th is a PA Day.  There will be no school for students.

We encourage our students and families to enjoy some of our fun events coming up.  Art night information is below.  Our volleyball teams are in full swing and we host a grade 6 boys and girls tournament in February as well as a grade 4/5 boys and girls tournament. Go Stangs!  We have Carnaval happening in February.  We are looking forward to our second Family Movie night on Thursday, February 26th. Then it’s March!

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to Michelle Mendes - Vice Principal (mendesmi@hdsb.ca) or Jeff Chaisson - Principal (chaissonj@hdsb.ca).

Reminder: MSB Art Night -- Paint

Good Afternoon families of McKenzie-Smith Bennett PS,

Welcome back winter!  We hope everyone had a chance to rest with their families yesterday.  We want to remind all our families to please put safety first.  We are trying our best to ensure that all walkways are plowed and salted but we are a large building.  Safety precautions to note:

-please do not cut across grass areas as they are not salted.  Please stay on the sidewalks.

-please do not allow students to play on the large snow hills in the parking lot.  This is the only area the plow has to put the snow when they plow the lot.

Junglesport continues today and has been a hit with our students.  This unique opportunity comes to us thanks to your support through fundraising.  Thank you!

As we move through the winter months, we want you to look forward to family movie night two, art night, and other great events at the school.

If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to Michelle Mendes - Vice Principal (mendesmi@hdsb.ca) or Jeff Chaisson - Principal (chaissonj@hdsb.ca).
