Police Record Check (PRC) Update for Volunteers – Effective April 1, 2026

In December 2025, the Ontario Ministry of Education introduced amendments to Police Record Check requirements under Ontario Regulation 298/25, effective April 1, 2026. As a result, school boards are now required to obtain a new Police Record Check (PRC) for all school volunteers every five years. A new PRC will also be required if there has been a lapse in submitting the Annual Offence Declaration.

These updated requirements apply to both current and new volunteers and are part of ongoing efforts to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. We sincerely appreciate the time and care our volunteers bring to our school community. Your involvement makes a meaningful difference, and we look forward to welcoming both returning and new volunteers. Learn more about the updated PRC requirements for volunteers and how to get involved in our school community by visiting the Volunteer in HDSB Schools webpage on the HDSB website (hdsb.ca).

Southwest Burlington Elementary School Boundary Review Update

As part of the ongoing Boundary Review Process, a number of potential options were presented and carefully evaluated against established criteria. The list has been narrowed down to two options that will be shared with the public for feedback.

The two options currently being considered are Option 13C and 14B, with the possibility of modifications based on community input.

Impact to Pineland: Both options would result in a very small increase in school utilization. Over the next 10 years, this could mean an increase of approximately 9 to 20 additional students per year, compared with the status quo.

A Public Consultation Meeting will be held at Burlington Central High School (1433 Baldwin Street) on Wednesday March 11th from 7:00 - 8:30 PM. This meeting will outline the boundary review process, present the options being considered, address transition plans and next steps.

Attendees and members of the public will have access to an Information Feedback Form to share feedback on the options presented. The feedback form will be open from Monday, March 9th to Wednesday, March 25th.

For those interested in learning more, all options, meeting presentations and recordings are available on the HDSB webpage Southwest Burlington Elementary School Boundary Review.

What Your Dance-A-Thon Support Made Possible

Your generosity supporting our Dance-a-thon with a net profit of almost $5,000 has helped fund valuable STEM resources for our students:

  • Five ChompSaws - A kid-safe power tool for cutting cardboard. It brings ideas to life, used for all grades and cross-curricular (our Art Club even used them for Finding Nemo)

  • 20 Digital Microscopes - Enhances indoor and outdoor science exploration.

  • Garden Boxes - Supporting outdoor education across multiple curriculum areas including plants, soils, and life systems. Eco Club to assist with ongoing upkeep.

  • Design & Technology Cart - Stocked with building supplies for Primary/Junior classroom learning and Tech Club activities.

These additions have a meaningful impact on classroom engagement and hands-on learning for our students.  We are grateful for your support—whether you donated or volunteered, your involvement helps make opportunities like this possible.

Fundraising Survey Update

Thank you to everyone who completed the Fundraising and Student Dance-a-thon surveys! We’re reviewing all of your feedback and suggestions as we plan for upcoming fundraisers.

STEM was identified as the top funding category, with ideas, such as digital microscopes, being implemented from your feedback.

Southwest Burlington Elementary School Boundary Review Update

Pineland is represented at the Southwest Burlington Elementary Boundary Review by two School Council members.

The Boundary Review’s objectives include:

    •    Addressing over-utilization at Tom Thomson PS and minimizing portables

    •    Simplifying Grade 6–7 and Grade 8–9 pathways to reduce split cohorts

    •    Ensuring balanced long-term enrolment

    •    Making better use of under-utilized schools

    •    Exploring alternative uses for surplus elementary school space

The key takeaway: At this time, none of the options being discussed would impact Pineland. Our school is currently operating at approximately 65% capacity, and 10-year projections show this remaining stable. Pineland continues to experience healthy, consistent enrolment.

We remain actively engaged in this process and will keep families informed if anything changes.

For those interested in learning more, all meeting presentations and recordings are available on the HDSB webpage Southwest Burlington Elementary School Boundary Review.

A Message from EcoClub!

Do you know that deleting your emails you no longer need helps save energy? Every email, attachment, and file takes up space on servers in data centers, which run 24/7 and consume a massive amount of electricity for processing, storage and cooling. Data centers use a significant amount of energy for their servers and the cooling systems needed to keep them from overheating. When deleting unnecessary emails, you free up digital storage which reduces the strain on data centers.

Our Student Well Being Crew is a group of 9 students in Grades 5 and 6 that was formed in November. We are registered as a school with Ontario Active School Travel-an Ontario-wide program dedicated to children’s mobility, health and happiness, delivered by Green Communities Canada. Pineland will receive a certificate of participation following this event. A reminder will be sent out to dress warm for this day closer to Feb.4th. Winter Walk Day ~ February 4th, 2026!

Our Student Well Being Crew is a group of 9 students in Grades 5 and 6 that was formed in November. Their first initiative for 2026 that helps support student well-being and mental health, is to encourage as many Pineland students as possible to participate in Winter Walk Day.  This is an in-school event, where each class will take part at some point on Wednesday, Feb. 4th, by going for a class walk outdoors. It will be snow much fun!

Tour for Humanity Bus Coming to Pineland for Gr 6-8

Intermediate classes (Gr 6-8) will participate in a one hour session on the Tour for Humanity which will be visiting Pineland on January 28th & January 30th.

"The 30-seat, fully accessible vehicle serves as a self-contained classroom in which instructors teach students about the horrors of genocide, especially the Holocaust, while addressing issues of racism, intolerance, diversity, democracy and human rights. As part of the interactive learning experience, Tour for Humanity (T4H) features a combination of video, PowerPoint presentations, activities and discussions in the four workshops offered, each adapted to the age of those in attendance."

"The customized bus travels to schools and organizations throughout Canada, engaging students, teachers and other community members from diverse personal and professional backgrounds. A creative outreach initiative, T4H teaches participants about historical and recent events, showing the connection between past and present-day hatred and its relevance on both a Canadian and global level. In the process, the content inspires participants to raise their voices and take action against racism, hate, injustice and intolerance to build a more equitable society."

The Ministry of Education recognizes the importance of Holocaust education and has added it to the Gr. 6 Social Studies curriculum: https://www.dcp.edu.gov.on.ca/en/key-changes-ss-g6

A Message from EcoClub!

"Did you know that road salt can harm aquatic life, damage vegetation and soil, and corrode roads and other infrastructure? Instead of using traditional road salt, consider eco-friendly alternatives such as sugar beet juice, coffee grounds, dark sand, or even wood ash to help melt ice and improve traction.”

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you for your continued cooperation to support our Pineland school community.
