New Oakville Secondary School

The Halton District School Board is preparing to open a new secondary school at 4020 Sixth Line in Oakville in September 2027.

The New Oakville Secondary School will provide students with innovative learning spaces, exceptional programming and opportunities to explore their passions. 

  • Inaugural Year (2027): Welcoming Grade 9 and 10 students

  • Growing Together (2028 and 2029): Expanding to include Grade 11 and 12 students in subsequent years

The three-storey facility is designed to maximize natural light and collaborative opportunities that will accommodate up to 1,338 students, adopt school uniforms, include a Community Pathways Program (CPP) and 88 licensed childcare spaces.

Key features of the school include:

  • Dedicated Science and Tech wings

  • Modern Arts and Music rooms

  • Common spaces designed for student connection and collaborative learning

  • Turf Field with Dome, Practice Field, Fitness Room and three Gyms

Conveniently located near Highway 407, with access to transit and nearby trails, the school will serve as a vibrant hub for students, families and the broader community.

The Academy of Athletic Performance & Excellence

APEX Academy Overview

The Academy for Athletic Performance and Excellence (APEX) will be launched at the New Oakville Secondary School. APEX is designed to provide an integrated academic and athletic pathway for competitive student-athletes starting in September 2027.

Summary of APEX’s Key Components

  • Self-identified competitive athletes who want to engage in athletics and academics with an athletic mindset
  • Competitive athletes who compete at the Provincial or National level

  • Students are prepared for a $30 billion Canadian sports industry through a focus on performance technology, data analytics and sport science.
  • Clustered Health & Physical Education courses in Grades 9 and 10
  • Clustered career courses in Grade 10 to support career-readiness and post-secondary destinations, scholarships and athletic profiles

Students will enter a Sports SHSM for Grades 11 and 12. Potential courses offerings include: 

  • Sports Marketing
  • Sports Management
  • Sports Psychology
  • Kinesiology
  • Leadership in Sports and Data Management (Sports Analytics) to ensure professional readiness.

To accommodate rigorous training and travel, the program utilizes flexible timetabling which can include eLearning courses, allowing athletes flexibility within their training and competition schedules.

An optional supervised study hall is provided to help athletes manage the heavy cognitive load of balancing elite sports with their education, helping to develop the needed organizational skills (task prioritization, time management, communication and self-advocacy) required to succeed as a student-athlete. 

The school will be host to three gymnasiums, a fitness/weight room, practice field and a turf field with a dome.

Rebecca Newcombe is a visionary educational leader with over 25 years of experience dedicated to academic excellence, student engagement and inclusive school culture.

Rebecca has spent the last three years leading district-wide secondary programs and achievement initiatives in her role as System Principal of Secondary School Programs & Student Success. She is a builder of communities, a champion of diverse pathways and is uniquely positioned to lead the opening of a new secondary school.

Rebecca is energized by the opportunity to design a school culture that balances academic rigor with real-world application and builds the durable skills that students need to be responsive to an ever changing world, including critical thinking, discerning information, synthesizing complex problems, collaboration and communication. She is particularly excited to implement:

  • Advanced Placement (AP) Pathways: Bringing a robust AP culture to the school, including AP Prep for Grades 9 and 10 to build early confidence, and the innovative AP Career Kickstart Programming, featuring specialized courses in Business Principles and Personal Finance, in addition to the Capstone Diploma Program, AP Courses and AP Exams.
  • State-of-the-Art Technological Education: Creating future-ready learning spaces with cutting-edge tech programming that prepares students for the evolving global economy.
  • Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS): A Certified Tier 1 & Tier 2 Trainer, she has spent years shifting educator perspectives on student behaviour to ensure inclusive classroom practices.

Rebecca’s leadership is supported by a deep foundation in Special Education, having served as both a System Vice Principal of Special Education and a Principal of a Grade 7-12 school.
