Aldershot FI Boundary Review

​​​​​​Boundaries Approved

The Board of Trustees has approved the following recommendation of the Director's report Board Report 24032​ at the March 6, 2024 Board Meeting.

BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Halton District School Board implement Option 1, and establish new boundaries for all affected schools within the Aldershot French Immersion Boundary Review Study for the French Immersion Program as described in Board Report 24032 for September 2024.

Ab​​​​out the Boundary Review

At the February 7, 2024 Board meeting, HDSB Trustees approved a motion to initiate the process to review the Burlington – ERA 101 (formerly ERA 100) – French Immersion Boundaries.

Next Steps

A Boundary Review Steering Committee made up of trustees, senior administration, and planning staff will be established later this Spring to determine which consultation pathway will be undertaken for the review, confirm the schools involved, and review the initial options, in accordance with our Board policy (LINK​). Once confirmed, we will provide further notification to affected school communities, as well as next steps.

Boundary Specific FAQs

On Feb 14, 2024, a notification was released to schools that will be impacted by a boundary review was approved on Feb 7, 2024. The first step of the Boundary review will be a meeting of the Boundary Review Steering Committee, in February to confirm the schools involved and the pathway of the procedure. The Planning Department is recommending Pathway 2​ to the Boundary Review Steering Committee. If approved, the review will be complete in late winter of 2024.

A notification announcing a boundary review was sent on February 14, 2024.

Assuming Pathway #2 is approved

  • Notification of Pathway and Key dates will be released through school messenger.
  • Notification of Recommendation and the Report to the Board of Trustees will be released through school messenger
  • Notification of the Board of Trustees’ Decision will be released through school messenger
  • A dedicated webpage will be updated at each step of the process.

  • The Burlington Secondary School Program and Accommodation Review Report 17075 recommended a magnet program be explored at Aldershot HS, resulting in the current I-STEM program. Uptake applications in the I-STEM program resulted in lower numbers of students in the French Immersion program at the secondary level. Enrolments failed to meet the threshold for a successful FI program.
  • In February 2020, Report 20024 Aldershot High School - French Immersion Boundary​ recommended students from grade 8 FI at Aldershot Elementary Public School be directed to Burlington Central HS for grades 9-12.
  • Given the continued uptake into ISTEM from the French Immersion program, enrolments will continue to fail meeting the minimum threshold for a renewed program.
  • Current enrolment projections indicate that French Immersion is only sustainable at one location (i.e.- Aldershot or Burlington Central).
