Cannabis and our Schools

Cannabis was legalized in Canada on October 17, 2018; however, it will continue be illegal for individuals under 19 years to buy, use, possess and grow recreational cannabis. It is illegal to provide cannabis to someone under the age of 19. This is the same as the minimum age for the sale of tobacco and alcohol in Ontario.

At our schools, it will continue to be illegal for anyone, regardless of age, to smoke or vape cannabis. This includes on school grounds or within 20m of its perimeter, on children’s playgrounds, and at child care centres or where Early Years programs are provided.

Consequences for Students

A Principal shall consider whether to suspend a student if they believe the student is in possession of alcohol, illegal drugs or recreational cannabis or under the influence of alcohol or recreational cannabis.

A Principal shall suspend a student if they believe the student gave alcohol or cannabis to a minor. Note: The Principal shall conduct an investigation to determine whether to recommend to the Board that the student be expelled.

Education and Awareness

Cannabis education is covered in the Ontario curriculum through the Health and Physical Education Curriculum (HPE). The curriculum covers Substance Use, Addictions and Related Behaviours in a comprehensive and age-appropriate way.

The focus of the learning is on understanding health concepts, making healthy choices and making connections for healthy living. While learning about cannabis is specifically addressed in the Grade 6 Healthy Living component of the HPE curriculum, students learn about substance use, abuse and misuse as part of a continuum of learning that extends from Grades 1 through 12.
