ALX Announcements March 2-6

2025-2026 School Year

MONDAY TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY FRIDAY

A reminder of the Jr. Boys’ Volleyball Practice today during 1st Break at 10:40.

We’re excited to share that we’re starting a new Affinity Group for Black Students. This is a space specifically for Black students to connect, build community, and share what would make this group meaningful and supportive.

Our first meeting will be on Friday, March 6th, during the first break in the library. Come by to learn more and help shape what this space can become. The goal is to create an open, welcoming space with you, the students, in mind.

If you have any questions, please see Ms. Laidlaw in Room 117. We hope to see you there!

GRADE 1-3 - Come join PALS at 1st recess on the far corner of the blacktop. Look for the leaders in green pinnies.

Junior Choir starts today at second break! Students in Grade 4 and up are welcome to attend. Eat in your class for a few minutes and meet in the Music Room at 1:10.

A reminder of the Jr. Boys’ Volleyball Practice today during 2nd Break at 1:00.

It has been wonderful to welcome the sunshine back this week! The slightly warmer temperatures have finally allowed our students to get outside, stretch their legs, and enjoy the snow and snowhills during recess. We are also thrilled to hear that the Groundhog has predicted an early spring! While we await the warmer temperature, the weather remains cold for now. Please continue to ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather so they can stay comfortable while playing outside.

Have a great weekend.

Winter Walk Day Success

A huge shout-out to the 220 students who braved the cold and walked to school this past Wednesday! It was inspiring to see so many rosy cheeks and bundles of energy arriving at our doors. Thank you to everyone who participated and helped make our Winter Walk Day a "brrr-illiant" success!

KF-1 News Sharing!

For Black History Month, KF-1 is studying two inspiring artists:

Alma Thomas: An educator turned renowned painter known for her colorful mosaics.

Ekow Nimako: A Toronto-based LEGO artist building a more inclusive world.

KF-1 has been learning about Alma Thomas and Ekow Nimako

Jazz Band and Concert Band are starting up again!

Jazz Band will meet on Thursdays during second break, where we’ll be learning three pieces for our spring concert. Concert Band now meets on Wednesday mornings. This group will also be learning three pieces for the spring concert, as well as for our Canada’s Wonderland trip on June 10. Our Junior Band will be meeting for the first time this coming Tuesday during second break to plan our rehearsal schedule and select our music.

Congratulations to the Alexander’s Badminton Team

February 20, 2026

It has been a busy and productive week here at school! Report cards were sent home recently, offering a great opportunity to celebrate your student’s hard work and discuss goals for the remainder of the term. We also hope everyone enjoyed the Family Day long weekend and had a chance to relax and recharge. On the athletic front, our Junior Volleyball and Senior Basketball teams have been giving it their all on the court.

As the winter season continues, please continue to be mindful of the weather and ensure students arrive with appropriate outdoor clothing for recess. The playground can get messy this time of year, so we highly recommend sending extra socks and mittens in your child's backpack, especially for our younger students.

Thank You for Supporting Our Students

We want to extend a heartfelt thank you to our families for making the February 12th Dance Fest such a success. Together, we raised $2,830 to enrich our students' learning through new technology, STEAM tools, and in-school experiences.

Competition was fierce, but Mrs. Moskal’s and Mr. Renwick’s classes came out on top as our leading fundraisers. They will be celebrating with a pizza party soon!

Pink Shirt Day Wed Feb 25th

Pink Shirt Day is a vibrant, national movement to fight bullying. It encourages everyone to wear pink shirts as a stand against bullying and brings people together, promoting kindness and inclusivity. This day also emphasizes that everyone has a role to play in promoting kindness and stopping bullying.

The theme for Pink Shirt Day 2026, celebrated on February 25th, is "Sprinkle Kindness", encouraging everyone to share small acts of compassion to create safe, inclusive environments against bullying and discrimination.

February 27, 2026

It’s hard to believe that February is already winding down, but with March just a few days away, the promise of warmer temperatures and the arrival of spring is finally in the air. It has been an incredibly fast-paced month at school, filled with the energy of basketball games, junior volleyball, and the impressive talents of our concert and jazz bands. Between the dedication of our PALs and the constant hum of activity in the halls, there’s never a dull moment. The momentum continues as we look forward to next week, when our junior choir officially begins rehearsals!

There’s a lot of information in the BLAST this week.  Please be sure to read all the way to the end!

Grade 8 Grad Photos

The time is fast approaching when we prepare to celebrate the graduation of our Grade 8 students. Grad Photos are being taken on WEDNESDAY MARCH 25th. A white collared shirt with an optional necktie creates a classic look, but we recommend wearing whatever makes you feel great and reflects your unique style! Junior Choir

Junior Choir will start next week! Rehearsals will take place Tuesdays at second break in the Music Room. Students in Grade 4 and up are welcome to attend. They should eat for a few minutes in their classroom, and meet in the Music Room at 1:10pm.

After School Pick-Up Safety Reminder

Student safety is always our top priority, especially at dismissal time. We would like to remind families that there are several designated options for picking up your child after school: the blacktop area, the large parking lot, and the upper city parking lot.

For everyone’s safety, please do not stop on Sutton Drive at any point to pick up or drop off students. Stopping on the street creates unsafe conditions for students, families, buses, and other drivers. Thank you for your cooperation in helping us keep dismissal safe and smooth for all members of our school community.

ALX Read a Thon

School Council is excited to announce the ALX annual Read-a-Thon occurring from March 1 to March 31, 2026. Police Record Check (PRC) Update for Volunteers – Effective April 1, 2026

In December 2025, the Ontario Ministry of Education introduced amendments to Police Record Check requirements under Ontario Regulation 298/25, effective April 1, 2026. As a result, school boards are now required to obtain a new Police Record Check (PRC) for all school volunteers every five years. A new PRC will also be required if there has been a lapse in submitting the Annual Offence Declaration.

These updated requirements apply to both current and new volunteers and are part of ongoing efforts to ensure a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. We sincerely appreciate the time and care our volunteers bring to our school community. Your involvement makes a meaningful difference, and we look forward to welcoming both returning and new volunteers. Learn more about the updated PRC requirements for volunteers and how to get involved in our school community by visiting the Volunteer in HDSB Schools webpage on the HDSB website (hdsb.ca).

We hope that you all continue your journeys in volleyball. Go Coyotes!

News from KF1

KF-1 (Mrs. Maunder & Mrs. Suriano's class) learned about the Hindu festival Holi this week. We learned that it is known as the "Festival of Colours". We learned it symbolizes the triumph of good over evil, the arrival of Spring, and the strengthening of relationships. We enjoyed reading the book "Festival of Colors" and then creating some finger paint art in recognition of this festival. KF-1 also continues to learn about Ramadan through various Art and Stem activities.
