Health and Physical Education
Health and Physical Education (HPE) programs at the HDSB help students stay active, build confidence and make informed choices about healthy living. Through movement, teamwork and wellness education, students develop lifelong skills.
Why Study Health and Physical Education?
The study of Health and Physical Education promotes the development of a healthy and active lifestyle. Students will explore a holistic approach to well-being, including fitness, healthy eating and mental health strategies -- both inside and outside of the classroom.
Why is the HDSB the best place for Health and Physical Education?
-
Premier Athletic Programming: Our schools compete in the Halton Secondary School Athletic Association (HSSAA), and are top contenders in the Golden Horseshoe Athletic Conference (GHAC) and Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA); for example, the T.A. Blakelock HS Swim Team recently broke several GHAC records and won gold medals at OFSAA.
-
Student Leadership & Innovation: In senior-level classes, students gain leadership experience by running school and district-level events, such as our Annual National AccessAbility Week wheelchair basketball tournament.
-
Outdoor Experiential Education (OEE): We offer programming that engages students in outdoor recreation and survival skills while fostering essential planning, teamwork and problem-solving abilities. Through hands-on, experiential learning, students build self-confidence and gain a deeper understanding of human relationships within the natural world.
-
Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM): Through Health & Wellness and Sports SHSM programs, students gain valuable industry certifications and specialized training, preparing them for diverse careers in fitness, health and sport management.
-
Academy for Athletic Performance and Excellence (APEX): APEX is designed to provide an integrated academic and athletic pathway for competitive student-athletes starting at the New Oakville Secondary School in September 2027.
